I use Castrol Tranzmax Z (about $60 for 4 liters)
Its fully synthetic and I aint going back to mineral.

I have used these:
Dex 3 with lubrizol 7906
and
Penrite Light gear oil

all good and all quiet.

The best so claimed oil is Redline shockproof light.

ohh:
kinda hard to machine after the clutch is installed! =D

I use a mix 80/20.........ATF DEX III and VMX80 ( all Castrol ) with an additive, Nulon G70. Works well, even in the cold.

i think mine has valvoline semi-synth 75W in it at the moment. it had dex II in it and i changed it in an attempt to get the rattle in neutral to go away but it didnt seem to make any difference :)

Factory recomendation used to be ATF Dextron II plus Lubrizol additive. There seems to be no clear winner in the oil stakes for T5's factoring in price qualities and availability, do a search and read the numerous threads and make your own mind up from that. If its free then Castrol 75/85 will be OK but the syncros balk when cold (read canberra cold).

ahh i was wondering why a freshly rebuilt t5 i had done would crunch a little bit into 3rd on quick changes while the box is cold, im just using castrol d3 and used the same in the last 3 manual falcons ive had, no dramas

I believe Mal Wood uses Transmax Z in their T5 boxes, so that's good enough for me.

I asked Ben Wood the other day and he recommended Dexron III.

Then i asked about the additives he said dont use them, then i asked one of the workers there about oil and he said to use Transmax cause the Dexron stuff wears the syncros out quicker.

Seems you cant get a straight answer even with a gearbox specialist

well its up to the individual.

i would say use 70/80 light gear oil.. i had 80/140 gear oil in my gearbox and its been sweet (except alittle stiff on the cold gear change) untill i changed the oil to dexron3 the shift is smoother but since i swapped over to trans fluid the box has a noticable input shaft/ bearing noise..

so im going to change back to gear oil ..

and i know that ford recommend trans fluid for the 6cyl t5 but if you take a look at the v8 t5 they use light gear oil..??why??
the boxes are the same except for input shaft length..
