Ok, at the moment my car handels like a sack of crap.
And its lame. So I wanna spend some money on it to make a nicer ride and get it driving smooth. I was just wondering what's the best things to do first becides new shocks. My car dosnt drive straight. Even after wheel alignments so im suspecting new tie rod ends. Will replacing all the ball joints be expencive and make a noticeable improvement and what else is there I can replace. is there a sway bar type thing under the back of the car that has rubbers that would wear.? Thanks. Dave. |

By rear sway bar, are you talking about the Watts linkage mount that's on the diff housing?
I would replace any worn bushes, it will improve the handling by a sh!tload.

Yes, you can do the bushes at home.
When I replaced them in the Wagon, I could not believe how much better it drove. It was like a new car. I sourced the parts from Suziki Super. You can find them on Ebay. For the lower control arm bushes and the radiius rod bushes, it was around the $200 mark. Get new tie rod ends from them too, approx $20 a pair. Then get a wheel alignment. Once you have the maintenance stuff out of the way, you can start looking at handling improvements. What springs and shocks do you want to run? Shock choice will depend on spring height etc. Sway bars are a great upgrade regardless of ride height. I would recommend either a 27mm or 30mm front bar and a 24mm rear bar. These can be found second hand, but usually they are pick up only as the shape is a b**ch to try and post. Whiteline sells new swaybars, so contact them for prices etc. Hope that helps somewhat. Cheers BenJ

Full car bush kit is $500, Tie Rod ends $30 and a full set of ball joints are about $100. Then just your time to put them in, but it will be a new car.
And a great basis for upgrades. Shocks and swaybars wont fix your problems. |

Ok. So any bush kit brand is ok?
Like ones from auto barn? And thanks for all the info. Im currently running it on superlow fronts. Xr shocks pedders 2180 rears and stock shocks. Shocks are on the way out. |

A good budget option is the Ultima branded shocks. They do front and rear shocks in std and lowered variants, and for approx $140 a pair are great value. Suziki super also sell those.
I used the blue urethane bushes in my EB. The are a little more compliant than the red polyurethane bushes. Any brand should be fine. You should also have the ball joints checked. Cheers BenJ

OK, if you have to ask that, then you may not have the experience or skills to do the job.
First thing to do is to go out and buy a workshop manual like a Gregorys or similar. You really need a good understanding of how the suspension and steering works and fits together. Mind you doing this sort of job will certainly give you a crash course. BenJ

I know how it all works pretty much. Just asking for tips really. Special tools techniqes rather then the usual bashing it and twisting them off.

Some good advice for changing tie rod ends is get you self a small sledge hammer don't even bother with a normal hammer, remove split pin and only loosen nut then give steering knuckle a couple good taps, alternatively you could use a jaw puller just takes longer

Thanks. Dave. You say the car won't drive straight after a wheel allign. You either have a locked front calliper or the person who done the allignment was very dodgy. There is considerable difference with what will hold a good wheel allignment and what will pass for rego. To hold good allignment there needs to be no play in the componants where as for road worthy there is an allowance due to wear. If all is good and spot on with the front end I would look at the brake calipers as one may be partialy sized, eazy way to find out is lift and spin the wheels or look at the wear on the brake pads.

I helped re-bush a friends ED a while ago , the bushes and ball joints were pretty much all stuffed so we replaced the whole lot in one go .
Quick list of tools tools we used . . - spanner set 8mm-23mm - same with socket set - couple hammers - couple pry bars - Ball joint / tie rod end separator $24 ebay . can get buy without it though . - Spring compressor . Again you can get by without it but it does help - tube of grease - jack stands - couple blocks of wood Parts . . . -Supper Pro bushes (Highly recommend them ) $500 . -Ball joints and tie rod ends can be bought as a kit $95 on ebay . I paid a mechanic to push the old ball joints out and push the new ones in ($30) Then give it a wheel alignment . I'm not sure if you'd want to go to those extremes and replace everything like we did but the end result was awesome . Not only did it tighten the suspension up and improve the handling it also braked much better too , money well spent . |
