Can someone tell me the difference between the BTR transmissions 85LE, 91LE and 95LE, and what model years used which ones.

I hazard a guess to say that the 85LE was in the EA's but what about the other two?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers
Bruce

85LE - EA s2 (s1 got the old BW 51 3 speed)
95LE - EB, ED, EF, EL, AU

Not 100% sure about the differences, I think the 95LE has different ratios.

Couldn't find much about the 91LE, doesn't look like they were used for long, mainly about the EB S1 era from what I've seen.

95LE has different ratios and is a V8 box.

91LE: EB-ED, has external band adjusters.

93LE: EF - AU, possibly into BA? Dipstick deleted early EF's.

I found this on the web, hopefully it will help out others:

Ford EA 11/EB 1988-93 Ford 4.0/3.9L BTR 85LE Automatic Transmission
Ford EB/EB11 1991-93 Ford 4.0L BTR 91LE Automatic Transmission
Ford EB/EB 11 1991-93 Ford 5.0L BTR 95LE Automatic Transmission
Ford ED 1993-94 Ford 4.0L BTR 91LE Automatic Transmission
Ford ED 5.0L 1993-94 Ford 5.0L BTR 95LE Automatic Transmission
Ford EF 1994-96 Ford 4.0L BTR 93LE Automatic Transmission
Ford EF 5.0L 1994-96 Ford 5.0L BTR 97LE Automatic Transmission

Now, knowing this is a bit of a bummer. My ED wagon has a cooked/water damaged trans and I only have spare 85LE's. Seeing as the 91LE is controlled via the main ECU and not on a separate trans ECU, I will need to find another 91LE for the ED.

How much will one of them set me back - EB II to ED 4spd Auto?

Cheers
Bruce

Hi RD

As I am using an EL ECU to run my EB 91LE BTR, I don't see why the ED ECU wouldn't run the 85LE BTR provided the plugs on the boxes for the looms are the same.

Snap? do you have any opinion on this?

BenJ

Hi Ben

I was wondering that very thing this afternoon. I checked out all the EA's I have and they have the trans ECU next to the brake pedal. Then, after reading my workshop manual, all it says it that the 85LE is run by a spearate ECU and the 91LE is run by the main ECU - nothing about difference in actual trans electronics.

The ECU I have for the ED is actually from an EB II, the same one as yours which is currently in the car. I would say the ED one died because of the water.

P.S. I am glad you used RD - that's what I am known as on my forum and I am more used to that that signing my name all the time! :)

Cheers
RD

Hi snap0964 , " 95LE has different ratios and is a V8 box " do you happen to know the specifications on the actual ratio differences ?

cheers

Nah, I was wrong - gear ratios are the same as the I6's, shift points and torque converter stall differ though.

Ride: XG falcon ute

Location: perth
WA, Australia

Hiya. I have a 1994 XG ute. It had the 4.0 litre multipoint & 91le transmission in it. The engine died so I found a cheap NA fairlane with the same engine. I removed the Engine & trans from both cars and fitted the Fairlane package to the XG ute. The problems I am encountering are that the fairlane trans is a btr 85 le (not like the original XG 91 le) and fits with no problem  But on test driving the XG ute it shifts a little funny and will not select/ go to converter lock up  I fear I will have to rebuild the orginal unit out of the XG ( it was replaced due to shift problems) and exchange the transmissions.
