Could be the extension housing bush is worn causing the slip flange to have some movement.

i have a EA wagon which used to humm along, but stopped when coasting. Then the diff broke up into many little pieces. A second hand diff solved the humming problem. No more noise.

The internals of my diff are 6mths-old. The noise is the same before the bad diff, and after. A little quieter though because the diff is in better shape.

When I come back from Melbourne I'll get it fixed. I might even give Ford $100.00 dollars to drive it for an opinion.

Sounds like a worn a***.
If it was doing it in all gears then I would say bearings. But becasue it goes away in 3rd witch is 1:1 the gears are not moving against each other and the whole a*** and clutch pack rotates as one. Do you get noise in 1st and 2nd?

i have had extention housing problems before, and thats different to what you describe here. my ef does vibrate when it goes into o'd at around 60 k's cruising in econ, and if i go up an incline and there is a bit of load, there is often some vibration that comes on under acceleration but goes away if it shifts down or i let off the accelerator.
when was the last time you serviced the transmission by the way? sometimes the fluid gets pretty filthy and performance goes down with it. my gearbox has however done 332,000k's

I only have the noise in 4th gear. Only between 75 and 90kmh. Same sound a manual box makes when stalling speed because the car is moving too slow for the high gear that's selected. Never happens in 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear. And the auto was serviced fairly recently, although will do another one when I get it fixed.

like its labouring in gear hey. mine does that, has a bit of a winge then shifts down. i have a manual to stick in, so i am thinking about pulling the auto apart to have a look see inside it and maybe find what the problem was.
