Mine does this, it hums up and down in low pitch, with cruise set at 80kmh. Sounds like a truck.
I remember a few years ago when I had just gotten the car, going up this very steep road, and I had a play around with the auto by manually selecting a lower gear, and she went BANG in the drive-line, followed by a kind of faint burning smell a few minutes later. Thing is I have an external cooler, and the auto hasn't been a problem except for a few shavings last oil change, and that hum in the auto at 80kmh. Did I do something to it on the hill going up to the Macedon Cross, what would have been damaged do you think? |

dude i know has this, but it also hums at any speed the engine is on light throttle around 1800rpm. He has a noisy torque converter. it hums at stall speed, but nowhere else. its very odd

Sounds like it. Wonder what I've done to the torque converter to make this happen. Would it be expensive to fix do you know?

What would make an auto hum at 75 to 90kmh?
Maybe you're playing some good music that it likes to hum along too.... |

Could be the planetary gear.

I have no idea. I gave it to a transmission place for a test drive, and all I saw in his eyes were dollar signs, glazed over like. He hinted that he'd go through the whole drive-line to try and find out what it is, pull this apart, pull that apart, look in here, look in there. But I don't think this is a particular hard problem to trace, IMO of course. I mean what else is there that would make a noise like that. Diff and wheel bearings are new?

i have the same problem with mine but it is only just noticeable. mine is herd at about 1400 rpm in fourth gear and at first i thought it was the tyres just making the noise. my gear box is also changing into gears fairly hard at about 2300rpm but smoother when giving it a bit more gas... can anyone help me with these two problems

is the car lowered. heaps of e series humm after they are lowered due to the pinion angle

Mines not lowered but sits pretty high in the back, lower in the front. Might have to get some new shocks and springs and ask them to bring the rear down and make it level.

Ive heard that the autos on the e series are renowned for a noisy converter during lock-up (4th gear)

Nah this is far from normal. My sisters EL is as quiet as anything. What I've got is a droning hum in 4th while cruising at that speed. Hums up and down slowly in pitch, like a loose gear or something is moving up and down on it's shaft. Then when I switch the cruise control off and let it slow, the hum goes, but you can just hear a thrumming or dull drumming sound from that area in the auto as the car slows down. Like something is out of alignment, or buckled slightly or something like that.
It's exactly the same sound a manual makes when you select a gear thats too high for your current speed. Like you select 3rd when you should be in 2nd. Mines especially bad when going up hill, that humming gets louder as if the gear that it's in is too high for it. Even though your doing 75 in 4th, the heavier the loading, louder that hum. |

Does the noise persist when you remove all thorrtle application? Or when you're accelerating briskly in 3rd/4th... or is it only when cruising? And does it do it in 3rd at all?

Goes away when I go off throttle, but replaced with a faint drumming kind of sound as the car slows a bit. Not in 3rd, only in 4th, loudest between 75kmh and 90kmh. |

These problems could be due to a shot rear transmission mount. This will give a clunk when kicking down.
