hello guys and gals!!
i need to know something and that is this! i need to upgrade my s**t brake rotors and pads very soon as they are creeking there heads off! i am going to go the dba slotted rotors from supercrap auto wich are $123 each! and the bendix general pads aswell! apparently ya have to do your bearings aswell!!! my question is can someone with very basic mechanical skills do the front bearings(following the hanes or gregorys repair manual) or is this task something only a mechanically competent person attempt. have any of you attempted this and is it achievable. thanks pete.

Mate, they are a full hub assembly & as long as you have the right size socket its hard to go wrong, i think its a 32mm. there is a torque setting that will be in the book.
Its pretty much a slip off slip on type deal. Have you tried RDA slotted rotors, the are cheaper than DBA, but still a good product. Cheers Stu |

I thought AU falcons run a full hub assembly sealed unit. (non adjustable/or repackable bearing)
The last ford to run the tapperd bearing was the EL. The AU hub assembly is slip off, slip on then tourque the nut |

so do you guys reckon that i will be able to do the bearings in my series 1 au !
f**k paying some mechanic a million dollars to do the work i possibly could do myself.. i have to learn but dont need my wheels to fall of on the highway.

Thats interesting, i had an 11/98 AU fairmont 5 lire that had the slip on style rotor, & the arly calliper & all the series one AU rotors i do at work are all slip on (non hub style)

If it's the same as an E-series. It will be quiet easy. Just need the right tools and big enough socket. It's just one large nut that holds the hub onto the spindle.

oh bargain!
i am aiming to do these repairs during the xmas holidays and will take my time and follow the instructions to the letter from the gregorys manual to make sure nothing goes wrong. i appreciate everyones quick response to my questions. thanks dudes. pete.

First time I changed my hub on the EL took me only an hour per side...so isn't too hard to do. Always good to learn how to do it yourself...great feeling of satisfaction once done . Good luck.

Check on Ebay with a seller called '10planets'.A complete set of DBA slotted EF/EL rotors (front and rear) were $300, slotted and drilled were $330. Not sure on the AU price, or if there is stock - can pickup at Silverwater, the stock is old DBA - in fact the DBA office is the next row of warehouses along from where you pickup.

AU 1 has the same hub setup as AU II/III and BA/BF, the hubs have a double row bearing inside them and are not replaceable. You can buy these hubs on Ebay for a lot less than genuine Ford but, beware, some of the CHEAP Taiwan stuff is not as good. Genuine is $175.00 each, part number AU2 2B663 A.

Is it necessary though?
I was under the impression that if you have some issues with your bearings its good to replace them at the same time - but I didn't think it was mandatory?

And possibily a puller to remove a bearing race that gets stuck to the stub? If so, then its a do at home job. If not, you're kinda rooted. And don't use those pads with those rotors. Will only lead to DVT and brake shudder. Even DBA and Bendix recommend you don't go with that combo. |

thanks to everyones replys!
i will in the next 8 weeks or so buy all the tools and crap i will need to do my repairs. i know this has been covered exstensively but if i am to go with the slotted variety discs what brand of pad should i go for!!!! general street driving! no hard braking done with this baby! just a nice looking daily drive. pete. |
