Please excuse the spuditity of this question but it’s something I
need to know. Can I cut wheel studs with a hacksaw or grinder? Are they mild steel or some kind of metal that may get brittle if heated when cut with a grinder. It’s a standard, non molested EF Futura that my wife carts the kids around in and the tyres are shagged. I’ve lifted the wheels off the ute, EA alloys, but the long chrome wheel nuts don’t seat properly as the studs are a little to long. Is it OK to cut 6mm or so off the end? Thanks, hang doors & pitch roofs I can do, - this car thing is all new to me!

Cheers, will feel a bit safer with the right wheel nuts on the
right wheels, even if it's only temporary

No way in hell would i ever cut wheel nuts ( unless you trying to get rid of missus and kids) they are that long for a reason!!!!!
Buy the correct wheel nuts, and all will be well, most performance cars install longer and stronger wheel nuts, not cut the ones supplied by ford shorter!!!!! |

Studs are too long the man says, he wants to cut the studs a bit shorter, not the nuts! Though they should be right length normally? Youre not using alloy wheel nuts on steel rims or something are you?

i cut mine with a angle grinder. They are still holding up fine with knoe dramas.

Call I will say is it is your wife and kids lives you could be putting in danger, morally or legally, your call.
I would go and get a set of plain old standard wheel nuts off a wreck, eg a taxi, as they will have the right thread form and angle on the mating face, and you wont have to mess with the wheel studs at all. My 2 cents.

EA snowflakes? If i remember correctly they dont use a chamfer, but instead have a narrow shank that locates the rim instead. Chamfered wheel nuts wont hold the rim properly!

Snowflakes and turbo-blades have the shank AND the chamfer. I just pulled the wheels of my wifes un-moded EA mont Ghia two days ago.

So do the 5 spoke EB s pac rims. Mine dont seem to have much of a chamfer? I personally have shorter length wheel nuts and dont have a problem. Instead i have washers, not because of length, but to provide a greater surface area.

Ok Now we're cooking. xb-coupe-351 I'm looking at shortening the studs not the nuts. The EF studs are a little longer so the EA "Snowflake" (thanks Andrew J) "nut" won't seat. The EF (standard steel wheel) studs have an unthreaded part at the start, 10 maybe 15mm, which I wish to remove. Now the reasoning goes like this - got popcorn? We're skint, got home last night & the wife’s EF is showing the steel on a front tyre. The XF ute (with the EA 'snowflakes') - is in the shed doing nothing with good rubber. Maybe a simple wheel swap - yeah right! Snowflake , untapered, wheel nuts bottom out before the rim is seated on the hub. So I've swapped the nuts, FOR A SHORT TIME, won't be driving my ute for a while any way. Biggest concern was that cutting the STUDS may be impossible, now I believe they’re mild steel & cutting a little off the end won’t do any harm at all. Then I can put the correct nuts with the correct wheel & have a Veeb while I contemplate what to do with the Fairmont!! Thanks all for your concerns, the familys safety always comes first. Opps missed that one sorry, are Snowflakes on an XF Ghia? If so I've got Turbo Blades, the moondish kinda thing with the grey painted parts?

Snowflakes are the ones that look like snowflakes. Came out on the XE ESP etc, turbo blades look like a 5 pointed twisted star, flat faced, with a bit of dish, but not much.
