Im thinking the AU auto, while a servicable unit isnt quite right for me. Im looking at replacing it with a manual instead. The question is:
Can you put the t-56 6 speed manual in an AU? I fell in love with that gearbox from dads XR6T, and I want that! Is it at all possible? Can anyone clear that up? also now for the real tech question... can anyone find the Ratio's for the following gearboxes? T-5 T-56 BTR 4 speed auto currently in the AU. Im thinking the close ratio of the t-56 with either a 3.45 or a 3.7 diff ratio will really zip up its acceleration and also keep it in its power band a lot more effectively than the 4 speed auto. Cheers and many beers!

yes you can but i believe its a fair bit of screwing around around to do yourself
check out mal wood auto (search on google). i know they do the conversion but it costs heaps, you would be better going 5sp

unless u have around 9k dont even think about a t56. go a t5 cause you wont make enough power to warrant getting the t56 conversion

really? 9k for a t-56 conversion? thats daylight robery! Ive heard of guys who have paid less than half that for complete BA motors...
What other options in the 5 speed bracket are there instead of the T-5?

if you need the T5 to hold more power I believe the AU 220kw XR8's came with T5Z's. Those internals should be a straight swap into a normal i6 T5 bell housing.
Can anyone confirm/deny? |

Nothing really major against T-5s, my brother has one in his EF and I think its a dog of a box, the clutch is vague and just generally s**t. I much prefered the feel of the t-56. Except its a $7k conversion for a brand newwie. (priced by mal wood). The T-5 just feels really cheap, like made in china cheap. Maybe it was just his, I dont know. I just want as many options as possible- especially in regards to the ratios.

I've driven quite a few T5's and some are surprisingly pleasant to drive and others are like stirring a bowl of stew! The AU ones are apparently stronger than the e-series T5's and being that bit newer aren't as likely to have been mistreated yet. |

Fair call private, so its a case of searching for the best one you can find and hope its not going to be that "bowl of stew".
would a 3.7 diff be too high for a t-5 gearbox?

Ive had a buddy recommend something else, and thats to shiftkit the auto and put the 3.7 or 3.9 diff under it to pull the ratio's a bit closer together to keep it in the band.
would this be cheaper and just as good as the t-5? for general driving and also the odd squirt?

I was planning a manual conversion, but I have a rebuilt trans lying around with the histall, so best to use it! |

Yeah he reckons its a safer bet than hoping on a good t-5. while the extra cog would be nice especially when on a track, its going to spend 99.999999 % of its time on the road so Im told the shift kit and diff change will be the best option for me.
This thread has been heaps of help, and its very enlightening to hear about the myriad of options that one has when modding their ford. Just wish I had the $7k to do all my planned mods at once would make for one fast mild modded falc-hoon.
