Hey guys after driving the new car for a bit ive noticed a whining sound coming from the rear so it must be the diff. If so what are the causes for this and how do I go about fixing it?
the car is a ed mont v8

Cheers

One too many burnouts....

Usually wear and tear between the crown wheel and pinion gear. Diff gears will need to be 'lapped' together, by a trans specialist. Might be cheaper to find a used diff in an XR8 or similar. But, you could end up with the same (or worse)!!
Are you sure its the diff ? Not tailshaft/uni joints or gear box.? Does it happen on corners, under acceleration or decelaration. ?

I agree with bear351, if it was the diff, the noise would get gradually worse with speed, does the noise dissapear cornering? How much backlash does it have? A replacement diff/center/axles should be readily available at a friendly wreckers near you.

My EL 6 cyl's LSD made a sort of whirring/low whine sound when turning in a very slow, sharp corner (i.e. when parking in parking lots). When I replaced the diff oil, it stopped, so I assume it was from low oil. Might be worth changing if you can do so at home.

i would check and change the oil first, i would bet the oil in the diff has never been changed..most people overlook the diff oil when servicing..

my au had a whine in the diff and at 250'000km i would expect some diff noise, anyway i drained the oil and it was like black water.lol.

replaced it with some decent h/d gear oil and its as good as new....

Ill try the oil first before I may have to go spend big money on getting the diff looked at or replaced

seconded.

being a Fairmont Ghia V8 it probably has a factory LSD?

Id give it a nice fresh oil change and a small tube of Nulon G70.
