Chafe marks suggest the wheel had been moving on the adapter for some time? It looks to me like definitely the nuts are at fault, not the adapter as such - ie. they've worked loose or been loosened - or possibly had been OVER tightened and stripped the thread inside the nuts. The fact that the studs are bent but the adapter itself has not otherwise cracked up or deformed speaks well of the quality of the adapter.

I doubt the hub adaptors are to blame.
i put my car sideways into a gutter n bent everything but the adaptor.

i had trouble with getting nuts to fit my rims properly. i reckon the nuts may have been the wrong size and your wheel vibrating caused the damage

forgot about this topic.

i discovered the problem a week or so ago.

the thread pitch on the hub adaptor studs are different to factory studs
cant remember exactly, but ones 1.5 and the other is 1.75

so pretty much they wound on the first few turns, but didnt grab properly :S

So it's not that hub adapters are all dangerous. Just that incorrect ones with nuts that don't match are... I'd be saying the same could easily happen if was bolting the wheel to the hub.

i got a new set from tempe when i put my 20's on. the rear passenger wheel came slightly loose when i was test driving slowly round the block.
so i tightened them, and it did it again, and again. took it to local bridgestone. turns out they had supplied the WRONG NUTS. they screwed on but would not do up tight enough! once the right ones were sourced- problem solvered. i dont think spacers are dangerous, just make sure everything is correct and tight.

1.5 metric fine pitch thread--1.75 metric pitch-normal nut.

mate, count your lucky stars the damage was minimal and you did not roll the car or hit another car cause insurance would have cancelled your policy once they seen the adapters.

Says who? A lot of companies are fine with them - especially if they are legal in your state!

But what state allows hub adaptors, what state would override a federal rule other than to enforce a stricter rule than federal has in place.

If you know a state which adaptors are legal post it up with links to that states rules on "their" website.

I agree this fault wasn't just because it was a hub adaptor, still doesn't mean aftermarket adaptors are legal, you can buy a bong in some states over the counter but it doesn't make it legal to smoke illegal drugs, and who has meant anyone that smokes legal products through a bong?

Firstly, Just Car insurance are fine with my having them on my vehicle. Seconly the engineer who machined the inner lip for me says he has done heaps and they are fine down here. Thirdly, Service Tas (our transport government mob) said they have no reason I can't run them.

As for finding rules permiting them by the state on there website. Firstly I can't be f**k looking for them (because even if they are illegal I'm still going to run it - just like half of my exhaustthat's missing).
And secondly, rules generally tell you what you can't have/do. So I'm guessing it's unlikely I would find something expressly stating that hub adapters are welcome.

And finally, States can override Federal rules when ever they want provided they have the jurisidiction to do so given to them under the Constitution. They do not have to override it with a stricter rule.
AFAIK (and I don't necesarily know because I've never bothered to look - so I could be wrong) States have the power in relation to rules on vehicle modifications - hence why all states have varying different rules.

These adapters were definitely correct for your wheel? The way the studs are bent looks like they were very nearly the right size - but not quite... so when they were tightened it was putting a massive sideways strain on each stud - this sideways strain would have varied with corner load, probably sufficient to let the studs work loose - probably over a bit of time...so when you were on the freeway a few minutes before I'd bet some if not all of the studs were flexing and getting loose. Go buy the right wheels - and also buy yourself a lottery ticket because you are very very lucky. ps I thought adapters and spacers were completely illegal??

The studs are bent because the car was still rolling on the wheel as it was coming off
