my clutch is not slipping at all... but im finding it very hard engaging gears in my EA T5 gear box.. ive adjusted the cable through the firewall about as much as possible but is still very hard engaging any gear without loud clunking/or grinding of the gears... sometime i ham fist it into 1st.. take off but the gearbox "BANGS" out of gear and into nuetral.. every gear change i find myself virtualy hitting th gear lever in the direction of the gear needed.. instead of normally just calmly slotting it into place...
any suggestions?? cheers for ideas'... |

Check to see if the firewall is cracked around where the clutch cable comes through.

that sounds like something major..
jumping out of gear and grinding isnt a good sign. do you need to hold it in each gear or just first?? sounds like the old ea box dont like the rwkws your pushing .. |

Could be the throw out bearing on the clutch fork has collapsed which is a pain in the a##e. Had this once on an old Datto, thought the box was shot but when I pulled it out the bearing on the clutch fork was totaly shagged. Replaced it and back to normal.

would hate to say it matt sounds like your box is on it's last legs looks like time for rebuild..
and fire wall isn't cracked as it was only not long ago reinforced.

For all gears to be hard engaging sounds like a clutch issue.
Sounds like the cable is stretching - this means breakage will be very very soon. Be a good idea to examine the cable down near the bellhousing, and also at the pedal. Also get someone to operate the pedal, so you can look for flexing in the clevises/connectors, etc.

till then use the syncros in the box to change gears as i'd imagine smacking it into gear isn't doin much good. I had to do this when my clutch pedal fell off on my old ea s-pac. Not fun on a 150km trip home.
The biggest pain was having to start it in gear and driving slower to accomodate the syncros. Also check to see whether it will shift fine without engine running / load on gearbox. My thrust bearing was going for 2.5yrs and never caused any trouble. When i cracked the firewall it would shift fine without car turned on and no load on box but when running was very difficult to get into gear. I know you said it was reinforced not long ago but it may have cracked again? worth double checking anyways? If it turns out to be the firewall check the work they do because when done properly the brake booster should be removed and reinforced behind as there is a lot of pressure at play there.

could also be the folk in the box as i know a mate on here has a ea and his folk bend in the box and couldn't get gears,was a real struggle to grab gear .

Both cables have the same inner to outer cable travel, you'll be able to fit either without any problem - the cable loop across from the engine exhaust is a bit bigger, but no big issue.

yeah i think im running the longer cable which is a good thing, cause by the look of it if it were any shorter it would be pulling down from the firewall

I'm simply posting what I've found from experience . . . . Anyways, lets actually focus on this thread, rather than about who is right, etc. Not sure whether ford make their own cables - I have gotten mine from Autopro, and they supply from Flexible drive agencies - this is from Nov 07, there were 2 types still available, so if you can't get the specific EF/EL cable, then the other will still suffice as mentioned.
