my Xf used to be all over the place, replaced the steering box (power steer) with reco and it drove 100 times better.

I've owned a couple of x series falcs and also work with tyres, seen this problem many times. take the car to a good wheel aligner and get them to check the whole front end there is a huge difference as to what will pass for rego and what will give firm comfortable steering. Could be as simple as a few rubbers or a decent wheel alignment.

Also might need to tighten up the mechinism in the box. From memory ther is a big locknut over the top of a small bolt on the actual box. Undo the locknut and do up the bolt until it just (only just!) nips up, then retighten the locknut. This will remove any slop in the steering box itself.

The adjustment is different. The one you described smoke is the powere steering version. The one I described (with a big bolt rather than the allen key) is the manual version. It is adjusted from under the bonnet rather than under the guard. Same principle but

I changed, toe arms, upper and lower ball joints, springs, idler arm, shocks. Got an allignment, all was sweet for a week, now it has a mind of its own again.
Sometimes it goes to the left, than other times it pulls hard right, and has destroyed another set of tyres. So ill try tightening that nut tommorrow Thanks for your help ken on this issue. Where were you when i needed you..... Got me 4v valves for you to shove in too....
