Hi I was browsing a few suppliers in the US they had a aftermarket bellhousing to fit a ZF transaxle behind a 385 series big block (429 460)
I then thought well does ZF make all there transmissions with the same round bolt patterns and diameters? So what I was hoping for was someone with a 6 speed ZF out of there car at present have a photo and or could do a measure up or something. I would also like to know the depth and diameter of the torque convertor and bell housing too plus which side the starter is on both v8 and 6 turbo and maybe of course bolt patterns of this. I can just imagine a big block in a Fg or Bf with a 6 speed or my idea of xf panelvan with 460 and 6 speed.... Now dont all steel my ideas. But I reckon it just would be cool.

Transaxle means combined gearbox and axle/diff. Like fitted to a rear engined supercar. I'm thinking this would be the 5 speed manual transaxle fitted to the Clevo in a Detomaso Pantera.
Not a ZF 6 speed auto. Can't see it even being close. |

Yes I understand the transaxle as per detomoso or gt40 etc. But both being round housings thought there might be a chance. Even making an adapter plate is far from impossible. If they are the same diameter at the gearbox front face then half the battle is won. But be a lot tidier if they were identical. May be easier just putting an adapter plate at the front of the bell housing and making the equivalent spacers on the torque converter to flex plate mounts.
Cheers for your thoughts all the same.

I guess getting it to fit may be do-able, but getting the zf auto to work is a whole new story. Even getting one from a BF into a BA is near impossible without swapping basically everything over.

I was talking to a automatic transmission specialist, he was saying that because the electronic module is built into the auto itself it is not too difficult to customise the electronics or to make it entirely manualised.
I guess he would know. the Yanks do a kit for them to custom fit the trans to hot rods etc. I just have had a closer look at the bell housing and now realize it is one piece with trans. So may have to ignore my first post. And just use a an adaptor plate sounds like a cunning plan. Another option is to slice 15mm off the bell housing and weld a new one to match the engine. I suppose Options toget my teeth into... cheers Mat
