Now reason it can't be used for the ZF too. My current plans are to add buttons to the wheel and make use of the cruise/stereo control circuits
At the moment, getting the paddles as they are 'useable' is certainly the most difficult part. That's why there's no installed pics yet. When I'm happy with them, I'll post pics. That may not happen.

could you use the paddle/switch assembly from another manufacturer who make them, ie. lotus, audi. I know expensive, but may give you ideas.

{USERNAME} wrote: Now that's a neat idea. First I've heard of it. No reason why it couldn't be adapted to the 6-speeds really is there? Were these units commercialised - or was it a DIY job? Lukeyson There were 3 units made that operated off the std BA wheel buttons, but thats as far as I went with it, because Im working other stuff. Although it wont work on a BTR, Retrotek have pushbutton and wireless paddle controlled auto trans actuators. This means you do not have a gear lever at all, its all done by electronic buttons and the optional wireles paddles, I have installed a couple into hotrods and they work well. |

That's a fault of my fabrication skills rather than my electronic skills. They work fine, just too flimsy, and I can't mount them securely with the design I made. I'm working on adding buttons to the steering wheel, don't want to remove the functionality of the existing buttons, so I've got some work cut out, to try and multiplex in some extra signals.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH...... Sorry about that....
Just couldn't help it... Sorry to interrupt yet another great thread from the binary, hexidecimal, abacus mine dude. Maybe, just maybe, you could work something out for the paddles using some mock ups of alloy sheet or what-have-you rather than make an awesome looking carbon fibre thing that you haven't actually got mounted anywhere. Just a thought. As for your "being out of my league" comment... I wouldn't worry about it. I am out of mine constantly and it hasn't resulted in anything, or anyone, permanently dying as yet. Rock on... Work out a cost for finished item and train a couple of dudes in each state to install! I'll do you a primo looking s**t - will do free in exchange for 1.5% of profits. So - when I'm wandering around the wreckers or the wrecks on auction sites looking for inspiration - Do I keep my eye out for one of these trannie boxes? I say yes. I also say I should get a highly paid job, cheers |

OK, this is a bit cheeky of me but..... If you're not producing or selling them - what are the chances you'd be willing to share the specs of what you did in a tech article? How did you go about using the buttons? Did flicking the Shifter to the left do some sort of relay switching of the wheelbutton lines so that they could be used for changing gears instead of their normal functions? I find this an intruiging solution and feel compelled to try to learn more! Lukeyson |

Weekend Update
Steering Wheel Controls Not much progress, a lot of learning taking place (i.e. how to use the existing wiring to the steering wheel). But this'll keep y'all interested.

But that's a bloody great spot for the buttons though! Expensive if you get it wrong....
So re: the lines, I have a clockspring at home that I could checkout for spare lines. With your setup, how many lines do you think you'd need? Can you use existing 12V or GND lines to get it down to 2? Can you mux the signal in any way - like the 'resistor' single pin system on the 4A SSS - to get it down to one? I'd have to say that getting 4 lines through the clockspring would impossible unless you are missing buttons on the wheel, but I'm not closed to the idea that there may be 2 spare unused lines through it somewhere. But quite shortly I will have something available that will stand alone control the auto, with two shift patterns programs, full manual control, paddle control, or pushbutton control (ie one button per gear) which can interface into standard wheel buttons, and is 100% configurable |

And fair enough too. Can't believe someone who is into modifying stuff himself couldn't believe it when you started modifying stuff! Molesting implies doing something deviant, dirty and wrong. I would suggest ripping into a original Ford bit to make it better is completely a saintly activity that deserves credit for the balls shown. (Actually, no need to show your balls... Cheers anyway)... And here's me still procrastinating about putting the digital climate control into my 95 Futurlane for fear of never getting a working cooling system. Go destroy some more Ford stuff that is lacking 1001110000 dude. |
