Progress Report
It Works! Well half of it does. It'll change up, but not down. I know my design is good. I must've made a mistake in the veroboard prototype. Easy to do, I find them harder to work with the custom PCB's (but of course custom PCB's are harder to make). So I've got some diagnostics ahead of me, hopefully I can fix this prototype, and will have a working unit soon.

Was a wiring issue (socket wasn't quite making contact with the pin on the board. Not a problem with my board design Just my craftsmanship. lol.
Now for testing, bug hunting.

First test drive tonight.
Well it works, kinda. Got some bugs to iron out. I could get it shifting down using the buttons (both of them), the shifter itself worked fine (as per stock). I figure the resitance values I chose for the extra buttons are too close together, I couldn't tune the sensor to pick them individually when it was in the car (the bench test worked, so there must be some interferance in car). This means I'll have to disassemble the steering wheel assembly again and change the resistors on the new buttons.

Second test drive last night, with it all working.
But the down button was conflicting with the mode/speed alert button. Doesn't bother me, but if you were using the ICC for stereo duties, you'd flick through AM, FM, AUX, CD etc. on every down shift. lol. So the hard slog T&E (trial and error) phase begins. On the plus side, once they were working, using them became second nature. Very easy to use (yes it's just pushing buttons with your thumbs), but it 'just clicks', and away you go. Were I some kind of marketing major, I'd start spouting words like 'ergonomic' and 'revolutionary'. lol.

You're not contemplating breaking the link for the existing button functions while in tiptronic mode?
Are you still linking to the buttons within the wheel itself, or are you linking down at the steering-column clockspring loom junction C-166? Lukeyson |

No, I don't see any need to break the stereo functionality. There's a 5.2v source, the stereo buttons, take up various points between 0-3.1v I figure I can use the left over.
Initially, I had the down button, set to return a 3.5v signal, while the up button returned a 3.7v signal, this had no conflict, except with each other, as they're too close for my circuit to differentiate. Next I tried moving the down button 'into' the stereo buttons, as there was a big 1v gap between a pair of them. That worked (I got enough seperation to tell the up and down apart, but the down conflicted with the mode button). Now I'm going higher up, and leaving a bigger gap between the up (which I'm leaving alone, as it's always been fine), and the down (which will now be two E12* steps away instead of the original 1 step). I'm also now using 1% tolerance resistors instead of 5%. *For those that don't know, resistors come in fixed values, in steps. the E12 group is the most common available.

Is it possible to create a bigger gap by adding a resister of very little value to the existing stereo switch and changing the stereo pickup on the dash loom to suit?
Or ---- How about BLUETOOTH? |
