I had a quick search and couldn't find anything which can explain it to me.
What does a service on the 6 speed auto involve and how much should I expect to pay. I've heard that they don't need servicing but I can't see how that could be. |

the genius's at Ford reckon the ZF's don't need a oil change under normal conditions lol.
now don't you need the scan tool to tell when the auto is at the right temp so you can remove the little drainer and drain the excess? i know it's like that on Jaguars. similiar boxes?

So is it even something which Ford would do? Given that they reckon the box doesn't need servicing? Do any mechanics apart from the ford blokes have the scan tool that would let them change the oil?

I know it is a little different but with the JCB loader at work it is running a ZF style 6 speed gearbox (obliviously not the same gearbox in your car), But they reckon and so does the manual that it never need to be serviced. So far nearly 1000 hours and no dramas yet (touch wood). And it is treated harder than any car gearbox ie. slamming forward and reverse all day long under full throttle day after day, Not to worry it was designed to be abused like that for the type of work it does.

I have serviced a ZF 6sp tranny. It cost heaps for the fluid, only available from Ford too, as well as the pan which is the filter too.
The oil was very dark, and the new oil looks like 10W30 engine oil, a light amber colour. The fluid was about $44 a litre.

so kiddies. the moral is get your ZF serviced. Ford is talking smack. if you buy the car, you've got to be able to afford to maintain it. why do you thing a own a EB as a daily? cheap to maintain mechanically. and a EA SVO as a project (well actually thats hard to get body parts for, but thats not the point).

ZF service from Ford is $800 to $900. As has been said, the fluid isn't cheap, between $40 and $60 a litre, and is ONLY available from Ford.
The oil filters on these are part of the sump itself on the earlier models, so you need to change the whole sump as well (which is s**t plastic). Unless you want to spring for a later model metal sump that has the filter seperate. Expect around $300 for that, but will save on later servicings. Alot of the guys on the XR6T.com forums are using Tranzmax Z with excellent results, but only after the warranty has expired. It's a s**t cheaper and apparently makes the box feel better. Maybe have a browse there to see if there is anyone local to you that has serviced these things before. I'm the same as you, I'm dreading the first time I have to get this thing serviced. |

Well.. Genuine fluid is about $400, then new filter $250 to $300... Then labour.
Hence why alot of guys piss off the standard sump/filter arrangement and use Tranzmax Z. The first service will cost you about $600. Then each subsequent service drops to about $300 or so. |

That sounds ok but are you sure they're using that fluid in the ZF's. I've searched and can only find references to it being used in the t56.
