Hi folks. A relative has recently purchased a 2012 FG with the ZF tranny. I read here about the cooler leaking into the tranny. If I look down the front of the car, in front of the condenser I see what looks like a trans cooler. Is this correct? Its about 400mm long and about 200 wide, with a pipe going thru it looping back. It doesn't seem to run thru the radiator??
Is this the cooler that gives all the trouble? If so, what is a good replacement? Cheers |

Careful,
That could be a power steering cooler. Most of the transmission coolers are built into the radiators so unless an external one is fitted you wont see it. The only way you can work it out is by looking for silver metal lines connecting on one side of it. that's the auto lines going through the internal cooler.

Didn't they stop using the one built into radiator on the BF's? and went to the heat ex-changer next to the block on the passengers side of the car? My BA's are through the RAD Brothers BF xr6 4spd is through the heat ex-changer next to the side of the block, mums BF MK3 (09 wagon) is through the heat ex-changer next to the block? IIRC the PS cooler is just a bit of tube bent around with fins on half the of it .

I know they have the heat exchanger but due to BFs and Fgs having the milkshake issue I would assume they are are still going through the radiator somehow. Unless the heat exchanger still stuffs up on BF onward.. Funny thing to add to confusion is on EBAY FG radiators still show the internal cooler piping..

I dont think it mattered which it was, they were all prone to milkshaking.
My ba's still through the rad and never had a problem *touches wood* that will change when i get me a built box, and i find somewhere to mount the cooler, will likely have to be in the LH wheel arch area not much room left else where

Funny thing to add to confusion is on EBAY FG radiators still show the internal cooler piping.. other half has a 06 BF & it has the heat exchanger next to the motor on ya passenger side, where as i think my 04 BA has the old style exchanger?. the exchanger is the problem as it breaksdown internally leaving us up shiiit creek without a paddle ... yes i do need to convert hers before it stuffs up so answer is .... from BF [roughly] and up they went to the external exchanger mounted next to the motor |

Thanks for all that!!! but IF changing from factory cooler to aftermarket - you may need to change gearbox fluid lines. AND the factory cooler fitted to the side of the motor can fail putting coolant thru gearbox as per 'normal' radiator setup on earlier cars |

Quote: putting coolant thru gearbox as per 'normal' radiator setup on earlier cars Sooooo, the g'box cooler is still cooled by radiator fluid, not simply an air to air heat exchanger ? Anybody got a diagram of the setup. I have yet to find any manuals for the FG, which I believe are unobtainable, except online for a cost. |
