I am interested in using the zf 6 speed semi-automatic transmission with the supercharged Ford 5.4L 32v that is here in the US making about 372kW/678Nm (500hp/500ft-lb). Does anyone know if the this transmission is capable of handling the power/torque of that engine or if there were mods needed to the gearbox to supercharge the boss 290? If so is it just the torque converter needed to mod and is their a transmission specialist that would be best to talk to about such a setup. Thanks so much,

Cheers,

Nick

From memory the versions of the ZF box we have here have a maxumum torque capability of about 600Nm. Although there are versions installed in cars making more than that, so I guess its a matter of strengthening the box.

I have read on other aussie forums of guys with modified XR6T's and Typhoons that have already melted the ZF boxes with the power and torque outputs.

So going by that, I would say they are not indestructable.

i heard its not the gears or the running gear in the box itself, in fact, all that is quite good.

i was told it was the electrics, solinoids and actuators that cant shift with that much load.

not sure if thats right though

but for a everyday drive, awsome setup. used in bmw's and a few other europans i think

maybe a brake and clutch mob or the next bet would be something like a race/superhighperformance workshop? least they would have an idea of the BEST ppl to get it done right.

i'd suggest use wikipedia to search for info on the zf box and that might give you some more ideas???? as far as i know (not much) the zf box hasn't been used real widely in us cars.

hope you can find a solution to this, and keep us informed when you do! and welcome to fordmods

I was reading the local newspaper the other day and they were talking about the new Maserati having an automatic now and I think it is using the ZF 6HP26 which is the same auto in the BF Fords (but I could be wrong) so it is good for a bit of power and torque. I just checked and it takes torque up 600nm, so you would be maybe pushing the boundarys of the trans but who knows. :P

The 6-speed in the Falcons and FPV cars is the Zf 6hp26. There is another Zf tranny--the 6hp32--which is used in the new Rolls Royce Phantom and also in some versions of the BMW 740. I'm not sure about its maximum torue input but the Phantom puts out about 720Nm so its much more than the 6hp26. Now I'm not sure what it is that allows for that increase in power handling maybe the electronic like someone previously stated or just the physical construction.

Cheers,

Nick
