My 4ltr has the ticking sound on startup when cold which is practically normal for these cars at this age I know. However what I am noticing now is when the car is at operating temp it intermitantly ticks. Let me try to explain:

I notice this when the car is parked next to a wall(Mcdonalds drive through etc), if I hold the revs at approx 1300rpm there is a accending ticking sound that keeps repeating in 5 second loops. For example it will start of silent as it should be, and over the next 5 seconds it will accend in volume until it then goes silent again. It will do this over and over again.

Does it just sound like a rooted lifter or could it be something else?

id think it would be your lifters mine does this from time to time fairly normal for the ohc. Just make sure you have the right grade oil in it or if its overdue for a change then change it. I use penrite hpr15 15w-60 stoped alot of my lifter noise. hope all goes well

is that the 60 weight 'drag' oil ? that shiz is awsome, almost sealed up a cracked oil ring in my ea lol just reminds me of that castrol add with the old foulcan... "5 minutes son.." thats how long it took for my lifters to pump up when i started it haha but they were quiet after that.

i'd just go up one grade of oil not jump to those sort of extremes your likely to upset something. or try a GOOD oil additive such as lucas oil stabiliser. my ea loves it.

also, when the ticking is ranging up n down do your revs hunt up n down ? even if it's not noticable i would say that is it hunting thats why your hearing the intermittant tick. but as far as i've read no1 has a definate solution for the ea hunt. thicker oil mite be a band-aid, but it's an acceptable one.

HPR15 is 15w or drag and 60 SAE.

Not a heavy oil at all. good for falcons

Thanks for the replies guys. So just to clarify something, I am using 15-40 at the moment so you suggest 15-50?

15 40 is a bit to thin for older falcons. I might try the HPR 15 in my EB next time i service it. I always thought a 60 oil was too thick. Its got shell helix plus 15 50 now and its ok but maybe time for a change. HPR is good i agree. I use HPR 5 in my BA since i got it but never used in the older car.

i use vulvaline semi synthetic in my bf purely coz ford do for warranty vehicles.
