Hi All,
I have a 95 Ef Falcon 4L straight 6 auto. Right now, around town a get a really bad fuel efficiency of about 20L per 100Kms. I have made sure the tyres are at the right pressure and haven't been driving it aggressively. Any suggestions as to why the fuel economy is so bad? |

A few possibilities but it comes down to the condition of the car and how well it is maintained. I would check the car out in the following way:
1. Check fuel lines/tank and fuel filter connection for any leaks. 2. Your air filter could be partially blocked and needs replacing. 3. What fault codes do you have if any at the diagnostic connector? 4. How does your temperature gauge read during normal driving and what thermostat do you have? 5. Your Engine Coolant temperature sensor could be stuffed. (like running on choke all the time) 6. Your O2 sensor could be past its used by date and causing a rich mixture. 7. Is the engine in good condition?(compression) 8. How long since spark plugs/leads were replaced? 9. How long since injectors were cleaned? Poor atomisation of the fuel will leed to excessive fuel usage.

You should be able to rule out some of the items I listed by physically checking or testing the items. A good multimeter will help to isolate some of the items. You would have some idea of the last time you changed the plugs, air filter, ht leads and o2 sensor. If you haven't had the car for that long, assume the worst and replace or test each of those items. The thermostat is also important because if you have to low a temp thermostat, it will take longer for the engine to warm up and your mixture will be richer for longer.

my experience, 18-20l/100k's replaced the fuel pressure regulator with genuine ford one, took it to 12l/100ks.
nuff said. thats just my experience so just thought id pass it along. |

vac leaks on the regulator or map sensor. check all the vac lines

Hey Alfy2,
I don't think the O2 sensor and coolant temp sensor have ever been changed. So I will look at those two first. What's a normal running temp for an EF Falc? |

You could test the engine coolant temp sensor. The figures in the tech docs section(Engine Coolant Temp 20*C-3.1V, 40*C-2.2V, 100*C-0.5V for an EL but EF should be the same). Yes the O2 sensor is something that you should change every 80,000kms or so. Don't fit a used O2 sensor. New is the only way to go.
Normal running temp should be regulated by the thermostat which is a minimum of 92 degrees celcius for an EF(assuming it has the standard thermostat). Of course your car will run hotter than that during the warmer months and will climb well over 100 degrees. As fiftyone and Montgas said, don't overlook other possibilities. I know EF/NF fuel regulators are known to cause problems. They can be difficult to test whilst driving because you need some form of pressure gauge hooked up to show you how many psi of fuel pressure you have and whether that pressure is stable (within 40-50psi range depending on eng load). Vacuum leaks are also a possibility on a car of this age. Do you have access to another wreck? You could borrow a few bits from another car like the fuel regulator or ECT sensor. The reason most of us maintain our own cars is to save a buck and know the job has been done right. Be careful that you don't throw lots of parts at the car only to find that you haven't fixed it. New parts and sensors can be costly especially the genuine ones. See what items you can test and rule out that way you're saving money. A good workshop manual will help with typical voltages and resistance values for most efi sensors.

i had a TPS problem once causing very bad fuel consumption,so check the tps aswell.mine was within its range so didnt log any codes,but was at 4volts at idle
