Hi guys

I just took my EL over the pits and they found three things..

one of which was that the headlights were not right...

on low beam, the outside lights were on, and on hi beam.. the inside ones were on but the outside ones were not...

Is that how they are supposed to be? or should the outside lights have switched to hi as well?

Anyone??

I'm abit stressed and trying to finish the ordered repairs today so I can get it reinspected without the extra fees.
(tie rod end, brake booster and the headlight issue)

To took one of the spare lights apart and it has a single filament globe in the low beam and presumably the same for high so I'm guessing if the low is supposed to stay on when Hi is on.. it's supposed to get power fed though from the hi beam somehow... diode protected I'd guess.

any thoughts please folks?

can anyone with a GLI or fairmont please check if both sides of their lights are on when they are on hi beam???

If I know it's supposed to be like that, I'll just get a diode and relay and wire it up so hi beam feeds positive to low beam when on, but not the other way around..

unless someone knows something else that causes this.

This one doesn't matter anymore though I'd still like to know for curiosity's sake.

I took out the drivers side light and wired in a relay so that when hi beam is on.. it trips the relay which feeds power to the low beam so they stay on too.

all works good..

guess it shows you shouldn't run gli lights on a Fairmont loom.

Correct, the low beam relays are wired slightly differently - fairmonts run 2 high beam globes, and I suspect the low beam globe goes out. The lower series cars run a shorting link at the low beam relay to maintain low and high beam when high beam is on.

NP. Add the extra link to the low beam relay when you fit the XR setup.
