Hey
I own a BA MKII XR8 and I'm having problems with the steering. It seems to be very tight and sluggish when I turn the wheel, almost like there is a dead spot in the steering. I've replaced the rack and power steering pump but still no luck. Hoping someone on here might have an idea of what it could be? Cheers Calum |

The P/steering pump might have air in it,causing the tightness,or not enough oil in the pump.take drive belt off and manually turn the pump for about 2minute,then put belt back on ,start car and turn wheel 20 times each way lock to lock.
Another thing it might be is the power steering hose might not be in the correct position amd is binding or something,causing the tightness,to fully get air out of the system normally take about 3 days,hope that helps..

Thanks for the reply, I did try bleeding the power steering pump once it was fitted, but maybe I should try that method and see what happens.

Still no luck, it feels almost like the power steering pump is pulling the steering wheel agaisnt you when u turn. Might have to take it into ford and get them to have a look. Its driving me insane at the moment.

Disconect both tir rod ends from the steering arms and see if that makes any difference, you could have a seized ball joint making it hard to turn, we have found this problem in the past.

Thanks mate, the car has been off at a power steering mechanic for the whole week, they finally got it down to the ball joints and the wheel alignment was shocking as well. Its had the wheel alignment done recently, but apparently it was off by heaps. Picking it up today, so hopefully all will be good.

Glad i could help, ball joints are a problem that people tend to over look when chasing steering problems, we have had this problem several times in the past in our workshop. |
