I had a set of 17" CSA Prowlers snap two spokes on two different wheels. They never touched a kerb or went through a pothole, still don't know how it happened.

That example is from WheelKing who only sell Genuine Wheels so of course they are going to search around and find some bad examples of copy wheels stuffing up.
As has already been said the genuine ones fail as well. But very good point about the bigger diamter the more stress on the center of the wheel. You have the same issues with Hub Adpaters as well................. Oh well Buyer Beware

id say the commodore driver has hit a gutter and caused the rim to crack. Most likely explanation. As for scrape marks....from the tow truck driver dragging the rubble off the road?

If that happens to your wheels when you hit a curb, your wheels are crap anyway... I don't think that is the only explanation at all. There are plenty of others --- One of which is simply CRAP WHEELS MADE CHEAP that get hairline cracks and die... They are made with melted down wheels straight out of shipping containers full of wheels... There is little or no quality checking... The density of metal and the............ Ah, s**t., What do I care... He hit a curb. Rightiho everyone. That wheel was not at fault at all. It was the driver hitting a curb. I agree. And the scrape mark in the road was from towing it by dragging the axle along the ground because the tow truck driver thought he'd lift the front in the air and tow it along on it's rear axle, which then ripped the bumper off too. |

problem with ADR certification is that it only ever happens at the beginning when someone asks to import the wheels (if they even bother) - customs wont stop a container of wheels coming in as its up to the seller/importer to NOT sell them for road use.
After the initial ADR compliancing there is very little done to ensure that the product STILL complies to the specs, no problem with things not made in china or that are made in a factory under contract to an aussie/american/earopean company, but a very big problem when this factory or the one down the road take the design chintzyfy it and start exporting the copies (or someone send them a genuine rim and says i want 10,000 copies of this for $50 each) Ive never heard of a genuine rim failing for no reason (in fact you often see rims that have taken a massive hit in an accident and are cracked, but still in on piece) the problem is that along with the old alloy rims they buy off us that go into the pots, you also get alloy heads, aluminum cans, cpu heatsinks, etc etc - its all aluminum+alloying metals but you end up with a very nasty alloy that isnt exactly what you want your wheels made out of. if everyone stopped buying this chinese s**t they would A: quietly go away B: start making better quality products. early japanese products were shunned in the west as cheap and inferior so the japanese very quickly became BETTER than the west at making stuff, the opposite is happening here - most chinese stuff is s**t, but we lap it up so do you think they will get better soon? or will they continue on like this untill we have no choice but to buy it from them? and to think they want to send whole CARS here when they cant even get the bloody wheel right (invented how many 1000 years ago?)

Thing with Japanese is that Britian sold them the robot as the trade unions in England hated the robot (fair enough - it took their jobs and did a better job of welding and car production that the lazy a*** English ever did!)
Anyway, Japan perfected the robot and production line and also produce a better quality of product with tighter tolerances than virtually anywhere - Until the Koreans did the same, but cheaper. And now China... Problem with China is that it's all profit driven. Units of sales, flood the market with crap... Where do you guys think all the Crystal Meth comes from by the way? Chinas government doesn't give a s**t, as long as it brings money into China. They're on a huge export drive, and it is working for them to date as the world laps up the consumer products. If they fail, they were cheap, so we buy more! It's a good system really - PRODUCE s**t. s**t FAILS. THEY BUY MORE s**t. Ford and Holden have done it for years, let's face it! Anyway - Until the "FAIL" part kills someone they won't care. When it kills twenty or thirty, they'll start to care. But only if it's America or New Zealand (we have a trade agreement with them which would mean some top level discussions of such matters). A Chinese made wheel that possibly killed a young Aussie in a crash in a high powered vehicle... Well... It was obviously the young guys fault. He would have been driving too fast in his high powered car and hit a curb! NO WAY IT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE WHEELS FAULT! |
