Hi long time viewer first time poster.
Just bought a 93 ED Fairmont as a project car, and just had a quick question. On the instrement cluster the top left guage has a picture of a oil can and reads 0 to 7. What is this guage for? Is it oil level or Oil pressure? Atm it is reading just above the red section towards the 0, so i guess its at around 1. What Should this be reading? Thanks in Advance. |

Hi There
Yes, its an oil pressure gauge. Ideally, when the engine is warm / hot and at 2000 rpm it should read about halfway. However, a lot of cars can read lowish ( depending on the temp and oil used ) when idling at lights etc, but it should climb up the scale when driving / accelerating. Under what circumstances does yours read that low ?? |

Correct oil pressure should be measured at 2000rpm.
The oil pressure will 'appear' to be low at idle, and even worse when the car is hot. As long as you have the correct oil type and quantity in the engine, and the oil pressure guage shows good pressure at 2000rpm, it will be fine. Cheers BenJ

Hi thanks for the replies.
The guage doesnt seem to moove at all, regardless of revs or temp. Im hopping this just means that the guage is broken rather than i have constant low oil pressure. The engine runs fine, no power/idle issues. |

I would be checking the Oil Pressure sender on the engine. It is under the inlet manifold. It is also possible the wire has come off the sender.

slap another earth from the battery to the block, and even a smaller one from the battery to the body, watch it climb.

Hi
As said, check the above. Also, though unlikely, there is a very slim chance that at some stage they replaced the correct sender unit ( large ) with the smaller one which is only for the oil pressure warning light on NON S Pac clusters. Good Luck |
