Sounds like loose or worn drive belt is slipping. This is something that happened to me. Just as you described low revs and as you turn the steering wheel, the power assistance cuts in and out.
Replaced the belt, and tightend it to the propper ammount and it works like a dream not.

not the belt...i replaced mine already
and its not the fluid....done that too..helped but didnt fix it in my el that has done 260,000kms its just started to happen...i think its just the pump has become old and is inefficient in its old age so it struggles a little. Either way, gona get 1 from the wreckers n see how i go. |

I have the same problem in my current EA and the old one. Funny thing is it only started in both after a belt change, I tried loosening and tightening but it's still the same.
I was thinking it may be the tie rod ends? How do the tie rod ends affect your steering when they are stuffed? I'll keep my eyes on this thread in case someone figures out wth it is!

this is common with ea to ed mobil 424 is the start dont forget to turn the steering left and right a couple times to remove old fluid from power steering system.
Ford service says the two other solutions are to put an EF High pressure line and an adapter to suit. The other is Enzed can put a restrictor on the low pressure side. If this helps, May the Force Be with you...

From Mobil's Web site the corect oil for a EA-EF Power steering is
MOBIL ATF or MOBIL ATF 220 For a EF ONLY they have added a comment " If power steering system is noisy, Ford recommend to flush system and refill with MOBILFLUID 424." This comment is NOT mentioned under EA-ED All models afer EF use MOBILFLUID 424.

If its shuddering at low engine speed I reckon it due to the pressure relief spring in the pump itself getting soft. I work on forklifts and when you set the relief too low the ram shudders under load.
