I may need to pick up a unreigestered car shortly and I will more than likely have to trailer it. Would my 6cy auto EL falcon sedan be safe enough to tow a car trailer with a EL falcon sedan on it. It will be about a 50k trip, some hills but nothing steep.

Thanks

It is not whether your car can tow it. In NSW I cannot legally tow a Falcon on a trailer with a Falcon, given that the regulations state that the laden mass of the trailer must not exceed the kerb mass of the towing vehicle (passenger sedans and derivatives).

Cheers

mate your car will be fine, a falcon with the correct tow bar fitted has a 2400kg towing capacity
the only thing i would make sure is to have a tranny cooler fitted if there is not one there allready

Not that I know of, I got that off the RTA site.

Quote:
TOWING RATIO REQUIREMENT
The loaded mass of the trailer must not exceed
the lesser of:

Rated capacity of the towbar and tow coupling.
Maximum towing capacity of the vehicle.
Maximum carrying capacity of the trailer.
Maximum rated carrying capacity of the tyres.

If the vehicle manufacturer has not specified the maximum
towing mass, the maximum towing mass is:
One and a half times the unladen mass of the
towing vehicle, provided that the trailer is fitted with
brakes which are connected and in working order,

or

The unladen mass of the towing vehicle if the trailer
does not require brakes.

Vehicles with a manufacturer’s gross combination mass
(GCM) more than 4.5 tonne may tow in accordance with
the above requirements. The GCM is the gross combination
mass of the car and loaded trailer.

Cheers
RD

Frgot to add....

According to above fromt the RTA I could not tow a falcon with a falcon if I had a 1200KG towbar, but I could if I had a 2400KG towbar - ie Hayman Reece.

Technically no, as an EL with a proper car trailer will exceed the 2300kg towing capacity. Total weight will be somewhere around 2500 to 2600kg.

But saying that, many people have done it without a problem. Its a slow and steady wins the race kinda thing.

Have the proper 2300kg tow pack, load the trailer right and as Fwank said, make sure you have a tranny cooler or 20km in you wont be going anywhere quickly.

I towed my mates R31 Skyline with my EB1 with a standard tow pack and the car has a transcooler on it did beautifully, though I wouldn't be in a big hurry to do it again without a heavy duty tow pack.

There is a fine line between the laws, but they do that to f**k more fines outa people.

But as stated above, with the right towbar and a trans cooler, you can tow 2300kg, straight from the ford manual. If you have confidence in doing it, then do it.

I towed my 1900kg LTD on a 800kg car trailer with my dads auto XG, did it fine.

Im pretty sure my tow pack in only rated for 1200kg, so I might give it a miss.

Im my experience, the type of car trailer plays a big part in the equation. A very low-slung trailer with twin axles is far easier to work with and tow, especially if it has a mechanical brake system fitted. A single axle trailer with no brakes is very hairy and will run your rear suspension on the endstops, But as long as you go slowly and avoid the harmonic wobble you'll be right. Probably theres legal questions as well, so if you are in the country do the tow on court day when the authorities are busy, or very early in the morning before they get going for the day.

not to encourage ignoring specifications of towing packages but you ll be surprised at how far over them you can get without bad s**t happening,
