G'day thrillseekers. I am a bit stumped with some of the jargon used.
Frinstance: I was reading up about tuning Tickford LPG systems, and mention was made about the "stepper motor". Well, I looked in the manual, and I looked at the motor, but I'm buggered if I can find it. What and where is it?? Second, I was talking to a reputable fixer person (Parnell's, Vic.) and nodding sagely while he was talking about an AMF something. What does he mean? It had something to do with the Tickford gas system. I think it is the piggyback computer thingy that Ticford uses. Now the rest of you are talking about EEC-V's. Please enlighten as to wot that means. I know about ECUs and BCMs and MAPs and other stuff. (Well I know what/where they are) I reckon they ort to bring back the carburettor!!!!!! Just dump a load of fuel into the motor and let it deal with it |

A stepper motor is (usually) just what its name suggests: a motor that instead of rotating continuously, rotates in a number of discrete steps. I'm not familiar enough with LPG systems to know where they'd use one though. As for AMF, no idea. Could be the thing that controls the LPG mixer but not sure.

EEC-V = ECU
EEC-IV = ECU hope that helps

You sure that wasn't AFM "Air Fuel Mixture" he was talking about.
I believe EEC is "Electronic Engine Control" and the version number in roman numerals ie IV or V

MAF---mass air flow
STEPPER MOTOR ----AKA-- idle air control motor

That would depend on whether he was talking about a reading/result or a component.

Would a Tickford LPG system actually have an Air Flow Meter though? I thought Ford washed their hands of that after the XF or is that just with petrol cars and air flow meters are common in gas setups?

If the system is factory fitted and EF/EL then the system is made by VIALLE and adapted by Tickford to suit. In answer to your questions.
The stepper motor sits on the converter, the vapour hose connects to it directly. The vapour hose then runs to the mixer located in the inlet tubing. Its the stepper's function is to regulate the amount of vapour fed to the motor. The converter converts liquid gas to a vapour. The AMS is VIALLE's term for the dedicated ECU that controlls the Gas side of the system, if it is factory fitted then it will interact with your special version of ECC-V (petrol ECU) to alter ignition maps when on gas to better suit LPG. I have a copy of the manual which has a diagnostic section, if you can let us know what the problem is I can look it up and see what VIALLE recomends to check. Cheers TW.

Thank you twason. It isa factory fitted system, and a VAILLE coverter. There is no particular problem, it's just that the gas system hasn't been looked at/tuned for at least 75,000 km plus, and after talking with Parnells, they suggested that the converter may need replacing. It seems to be functioning o.k. tho' at the moment. I just needed to know what the terms meant, so as I can converse with Parnells on the same level, and not sound too dumb.
As for tuning, I have looked up the relevant information on this site, and it seems pretty straight forward. I haven't the time to do it @ the moment, so I'm giving it to Parnells. (They need to feel impressed tho' as it's not often I let anybody else play with my vehicles!!) Thanks to all the others that offered information too, it is most helpfull |

The system is adaptive and learns much the same way the Petrol ECU does, there is nothing to tune as its closed loop. However that said if you having trouble with idle or fuel consumption then perhaps a service on the converter would be in order, I would not take there recommendation to replace the converter, as it is fully sevicable and does not give much trouble. Parts are readily available so at worst case a changeover with a serviced unit would be far cheaper than a new one if thats what they are suggesting. Maintenance of Plugs and Leads are the most important aspect of this system. There is an a learn feature initiated by a jumper and short to ground but the system will do this anyway after the car has run for a while.
Cheers TW.

Very interesting!!!! Parnells said that to o/haul the converter was $400 and to replace it was $475. hardly worth the effort to o/h it! At this point, no trouble with idle or consumption, and I have upkept the leads and plugs and coil pack. ( replaced them all at some stage!)
That you say: "There is an a learn feature initiated by a jumper and short to ground but the system will do this anyway after the car has run for a while." is very interesting, as the instructions for the tune, as I read it, are basically just that. Do you mean that the system is constantly re-learning as it goes along? |
