When you look at the specs for your car and it mentions the ride height where is it measured from? is it from the bottom of the sill or the bottom of the bumper bar? im not sure. I want to find out how much my car is lowered from standard not sure if its 2 or 2 1/2 inch. Also if my car is lowered more than 2 inches but still sits more than 100mm from the road from its lowest point is it legal? I ask these questions due to these new laws coming in.
Cheers, Shaun.

One suspension specialist told me to measure from the ground to the top of the wheel arch to determine the ride height (prior to lowering the vehicle). Based on following, there's probably different locations to measure it.
The distance between a specified point on the chassis, suspension or body and the ground. Measuring ride height is an indirect method of determining spring height, which is important because it affects camber, caster and toe. Low ride height indicates weak or sagging springs. Ride height should be within specifications before the wheels are aligned What measurement(s) do you have?

I have not checked the measurements yet. The thing is i got my car lowered years ago and i can't remember if they dropped it 2 or 2 1/2 inches. Its got 17 inch EL GT wheels on it and it definately sits more than 100mm from the ground. What i was planning on doing was finding out where the original ride height measurement was taken from according to the manual and subtract it from where it sits now and get my answer. By what it sounds the car is not illegally lowered but just in case.

As a comparison, I've fitted King Low springs and the height from the ground to the top of the wheel arch is 660mm. So the factory ride height is be about 690-695mm. I checked through some repair manuals, but nothing is mentioned.

Ok i will check my car when i get a chance and do a comparism. I just checked my gregorys and its also not mentioned. Unless i find a stock car in my work car park and measure that one . The good thing is i definately know that the bottom sill sits more than 100mm from the ground. I can fit a coke can under the car easily.

OK i went to a few suspension places today and they reckon the car is not illegal so im happier now. Apparently it is at XR height.

ride height in termks of legality is measured from several different points.
For starters, the lowest part of the car (the sideskirts generally) have to be > 100mm from the ground. They also measure the distance from the wheel to the wheel arch clearance (not sure of the regulation height). To be honest, in my experience the boys in blue dont give you too much trouble regarding lowered cars unless you are doing somkething stupid. In my old bagged hilux i got ~6 warnings about the height i had it at while driving it |
