Just a question for curiosity has anyone blown their BA/BF Turbo charger or re built one and if so after how many kays and what happened? And was the car stock or tuned? Im interested to know how reliable they are.

The majority of their problems seem to come from a crappy oil supply when the standard filter gets blocked up. A lot of people on the XR6T site get rid of the stock filter and fit a bigger speedflow one to prevent the issue.
They should be just as reliable as any other turbo. |

From a turbo charger rebuilder that I know very well.
Yes they do die, often from people trying to go with factory oil change intervals. Can die by 120 000km no problem with crappy oil and 12 000km changes Common enough

Yea look at J.R's Street Fords XR6T..
Main issue is servicing and too much boost, too rich and retarded which burns fuel in exhaust manifold, turbine... Creating too much heat in chra... The old shutting down too quick after hard run also..Dyno oils don't help.. My mates EB blew his rather new GT3540 .. The tune was right up there with 15 lb boost 8* timing which as found out to be too little timing. safe for engine but appaently not for Centre housing rotating assembly.. $1500 to reapair $1800 at the time for a new one.. He went to GT42.. With rather moderate power / boost levels they are FINE !!!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the factory turbo, its the owners/tuners causing the earlier than expected turbo death. Some cool down is good after a hard run, quality oils, short service periods, correct tuning ......... really its just the same as it always was with regard to proper turbocharger care and maintainence.
Somewhere along the line this stuff has been forgotten by many owners. Good post EBXR

Thanks for your comments guys. I will stick to my plan of servicing my XR every 5 to 7.5 k like i have been. Its got 92k on it now was just a bit worried about their reliability. The car is standard only running a K&N so should be right.

HEAPS of WRX's and Subaru turbo's with 400.000 klrs on them..
With good servicing the bearings on there turbo's have hardly any play with thrust bearing almost as new... My cousin in N.Z has Subaru wreckers, if abused like anything mechanical it will fail!!!

When any engineered part goes outside it's specs it will fail sooner or later.
Stock Ford turbo's go for a very very long time, the higher the state of tune the sooner the chaos will ensue.

Stock Ford turbo's go for a very very long time, the higher the state of tune the sooner the chaos will ensue. If I was to get real power out of these engines I would fit a T04 size turbine housing.. When you compare them ? You'll see why they can have issues.. The housing gets restrictive at higher power, rpm... Heat is there enemy.. In saying that though a std engine, even with proper mods will last along time with correct servicing...
