Well usualy when you start it there is a huge BOOM under the bonnet and blows the aircleaner lid off!

On the ef (not sure about EL,AU) there is a little blanking hose on the bottom of the manifold that blew out once, that cased it to chugg

can i just suggest something now that this thread has matured slightly?

How about you go and actually start testing things? you can speculate all you like, but its all s**t unless you start to rule things out.

get a lighter / butane torch / carby clean and run them (UNLIT!) across the top of the intake gasket. if it starts to run worse at one point, you found your problem.

if thats not it, do a compression test. could be blown between cylinders.

aggreed..
dont go replacing things that probably are not the problem..
a blocked cat will reduce performance at rpm over 2500rpm and may rattle but wont cause the car to miss or chugg as you discribe.
if the plugs, leads and coils are good i would be looking at doing a compression test first. to me it kind of describes the begining of a leaking valve seat?? or the head gasket leaking between cylinders.. if the compression on all cylinders are within 10% of each other..
then look at a vacuum leak and the intake manifold gasket

I realised the "chugging" only happens when the car is cold starting (in the mornings)

Does this give any more clues

My daily was chugging - it was a blocked injector. It got better once it warmed up too.

Dont post anything until you've tested everything thats been mentioned.

Uhh replaced it with a whole new set?
To test it see if makes any difference to your idle once you unplug an injector.
Unplug, check, replug, next injector.
Then do the same with all your spark plug leads.

I replaced all the leads, then tried starting the car this morning.

The chugging is still there

I open the bonnet and the engine compartment is shaking violently.

I then turn off the engine, and guess what I smell inside the car?

Fuel.....

Should I try the injectors?
