Hey everyone.
I have a 96 ef fairmont 6cyl. The mods that i have do to it are: - monster flow pod filter, powerchip, full xorst (xtractors, hi-flow cat, 2.5 system with a resi). It seems to mis-fire every now and then. It usally starts to mis-fire after driving for about a half hour to 45 minutes sometimes it starts to mis straight away. I can tell when its about to happen cause when im stopped at the lights idling i can here a very slight mis-fire sound coming from my exhaust. Then when i go to take off it mis-fires Badly. It mis-fires that bad its almost like fuels being cut off and then comes back. Also a week ago my car got stuck in 3rd gear "limp home mode" so i stopped the car, turned it off waited 10 minutes started it again and then it was fine. And also the trans has been losing engine brakeing in 3rd gear. The car does seem to be running a little rich and also when i start the car in the mornings as i start it the idle dosen't go up to a cold idle temp it just goes to normal idle speed (750rpm). It started to do this about a month ago then went away and now it has come back so i replaced a couple of things: my ignition leads, my spark plugs and the engine has just been serviced. My brother said he will bring home a ecu diagnostics reader as well. What could be the problem. Some of my mates have said differnt things like: -my trans needs a service, TPS switch, MAP sensor, ISC, trans is stuffed, coil pack, needs to be dyno tuned cause of powerchip, fuel injection system. Please let me know of your ideas to what could be wrong. Thank you for taking the time to read this, i appreciate it. Cheers TURBOFAIRMONT

Iwas thinking it was the coil pack cause what i have heard you won't notice a mis-fire from a coil p-ack when it is cold cause it only shows major signs of stuffing up when hot. When it comes to the Ecu, it could be the ECu as i have a piggy back Powerchip on it and i have changed my air intake since having it Dynotuned last. I while back when my map sensor was playing up i got the ecu diagnostics done and the map sensor came up, so we reset it and it was fine after Looks like i am definetly going to have to get the Ecu diagnostics scanned as that will probably give me a answer and will definetly get the car dynotuned again. cheers TURBOFAIRMONT

When you played with the MAP sensor, did you also check to make sure that there was no carbon deposit in the vacuum adapter? Have you check that there is no leak under the Throttle by-pass valve? Have you checked all the bolts that hold the manifolds on? Changed your Fuel Filter? Had the Fuel pressure regulator checked?
One other thing, BA falcons have a similar problem and it mostly is the Throttle Position Sensor that causes the problem and it usually causes the limp home mode which can oft times be temp fixed by stopping and starting again. |

Spray a can of degreaser over your tone wheel on the harmonic balancer, if it is full of gunk. A bad pickup from the crank angle sensor can cause wierd problems. Also check your coolant temp sensor on the thermostat housing as for cold starts and clean out the ISC with carbi clean.
With your gearbox unplug or the connections on the passenger side and spray them out with contact cleaner, CRC etc then plug them back in. After all this is done and still the same( Remove the J3 power chip) and run standard ECU too see if any different......... Cheers
