I'm looking to buy a hammer from Bunnings.
What do you guys suggest? There is a Stanley brand Fatmax hammer 20z, costs $54 is it worth it? I'm looking for one that is general purpose use.

falcon1999 wrote: is there such a hammer that would last a lifetime? or am i dreaming my plan was to buy a real nice one that would last forever - general purpose I got one off an old guy on site a while ago who'd had it for years and years... possibly longer than I am old. I still use it today to flog stuff. It was originally a gimpy (i think they are known as a 20oz), it then had the handle cut off and a short piece of 1" pipe welded to the base of the head instead. Threw some gaffa tape onto it to make it comfy to swing and voila!!! This thing will outlast me thats for sure. |

Why is this in the 6 cylinder forum?
I reckon just get a cheapo one. We have 3 in total which have seen 10 years of use for 2 of them and the other one is newish. The only problem with one of the hammers is that the handle is slightly deteriorated. All in all, it probably costed my dad about $50. It just depends how much use the hammer sees. I wouldn't buy a $50 hammer and only use it once a week. phong =P~

Seriously, $50.00 is not much to spend on quality tools. IMO, your best bet is to by ones of big brand names. As for how long it will last, how long is a piece of string? Depends on what you do with it and how you treat it.

Buy 5 $10 ones, and if the first one wears out, get out the next one and so on.

Or, you can try a hammer made by Plumb (an American brand?). A builder recommended these hammers as they're balanced nicely and made of quality materials. If you're doing repetitve work, like nailing down timber decking or floorboards, you'll notice the difference.
