question on shortening the air intake piping...... i have a series 1 au (98) and i hate the long as air intake piping from the front top of the radiator to the throttlebody, i want to fit a cold air box on top of the rocker cover and have a bonnet scoop. the pipe to the throttle body would end up only being a few inches long. my prob is that i have been told that by doing this it will upset the factory tune in the ecu. its a standard i6 4.0 engine with no other mods (YET!!) and factory slushbox etc. can anybody help with info? thanks heaps!!

This has been considered many a time. This problems associated with this is that you will loose bottom end torque. Ford spent millions of dollars developing the intake. If they thought it would be better to have the throttle body pointing to the fender, creating a short intake, they would have made it that way.

In my opinion, you should consider the loss of low down power, compared to the small high end gains you might make.

No it wont do anything to the tune..
its a program that does change with readings from air, water and 02 sensors, so if the o2 sensor reads a lean mixture it will adjust it to suit..
so any changes to intake ect will be read and the ecu will adjust to suit...

just to clarify things, im not planning on changing the actual intake runners, i just want to fit a xygt style scoop/air box as close to the throttle body as possible...........regarding your comment ben, ford may have spent all that money, but a far simpler way would have been to fit a ba styled bonnet bulge and have shorter pipes. after all doesnt the longer pipes restrict air speed to the engine? and the factory pipes arnt exactly a large diameter either.......so to my mind, they restrict air flow and also help to heat the air before it reaches the engine (yes i realise the heat build up will not be much at all, but hot air does rob your engine of power) and i plan on doing other mods as money allows.

I understand what you are trying to achieve.

Another chap fitted a shaker to his AU and fed it directly into the throttle body. He suffered a loss of low down power, and picked up a bit of top end.

All I want you to do is to be aware of the possible outcomes.

so is there any way to achieve my goals without losing lowdown power?

It is the length of the intake that helps make the low down power.

There are quite a number of cars making around 140rwks using the factory intake. It is also possible to replace the factory piping with a 3" steel/allow intake providing more air, but still much the same length.

In the end it is up to you.

what you could do also is get a different cam for lowdown power.... or have the intake setup that you want (shaker style looks sweet) but have a pipe the same length as stock go around into the TB.

a 3" intake is what ive done with mine, i found there to be more responsiveness through the revs, so in theory if you adapted the 3" steel intake with the same lenght as a stock one with a shaker.... maybe have a small shaker where your original airbox is??? ive been thinking about this with my car but im not too sure how it will look....

Why not get the throttle body turned around?

LOL at swapping cams for one with more low down torque.

What are you trying to achieve by all this?

just pump it full of giggle gas. that will fix your torque problems.
