g'day
lately my car has been geting worse and worse trying to go into gear so i brought a new clutch cable fitted it to day went to adjust it and found a crack in the firewall around where the cable sits. its got to be a good 4inches across and 3 inches up..... ive heard its a commen problem just wondering if any1 else has had this prob and how they have got it fixed???

i've fixed a couple of them. removed the dash welded the crack on both sides and welded in a plate to spread the load.
some people will use a bolt plate. I wont. |

i was hopeing you werent going to say that...ive welded the outside how long does it take to pull the dash n etc out?

I got a bracket bolted in there. They managed to do it without pulling the dash out and it's been fine ever since. there was no welding so no risk of setting the carpet alight etc. Ford actually sell the bracket as it's a very common problem.

suppose you dont know how much?? i drove it to syd airport today and it went ok but im just not happy with it

i used a double plate one on each side and bolt it and stickaflex it around firewall seal it where crack was and make it stronger havent had a problem since and its been 11 months....

Had the same problem with my xr6 i just screwed to plates together with four screws in each corner and drilled a hole in the middle for the cable. That was 3 years ago, haven't had a problem since and actually looks pretty sweet.

I wont. you're usualy right with your opinions tickford, why wouldnt you bolt a plate on? Ibolted a plate on my au, but it didnt just crack it tore a 50 cent size piece of firewall out.

The first ones i had ever seen done were rodeos, they crack around the clutch master, the repair was weld the cracks then plate both sides, never saw one crack again. I just continued to take the approach and haven't had any problems, so i'm sticking with it. the bolt on plate may work well, but at the end of the day i need to know my customers won't a chance if the problem comming back. |
