Is there a way to tell how old a battery is by looking at it?

Yes, read the date stamp, usually weeks+year.

every battery varies on their method, search on a search engine.

If your trying to get warranty without receipt, forget it.

If you've bought a car with a f**k battery, age is far from the only determining factor to do with if a batteries lifespan.

may i ask why your trying to work it out?

So he can buy a second hand one or go to the wreckers and search for a recent manufactured battery.

cough up, its a battery ffs, i hate it how people skimp on such necessities, It costs more rooting around when you have a flat battery rather than fixing the issue.

Absolutely - read enough threads on here regarding battery issues.
Also buy and keep a battery charger - they're cheap enough for half reasonable units.

There is no such thing as a reco battery, second hand is a lottery, bite the bullet buy a new one, battery trouble really sucks, batteries and radiators buy old you buy trouble!
