if you want it to only come on when the doors open, supply it with permanent power from somewhere (ie battery or from the stereo or other accessory)
and use for an earth the line that comes from the door switch. the interior lights use a switched earth, so that when the door is open, the swtich contacts with the car body, supplying earth and the lights turn on that should work like a charm, and easy as to get to!

Any chance someone could provide a "d***head's Guide To Installing Footwell Lights In A GLi"? (EL GLi having no ignition lighting.) I'm more than a bit daunted fiddling about with the wiring loom behind the ashtray, myself. The doco is informative, but kinda vague on how you're actually meant to get the wiring in there.
Considering adding f'well lights in a couple weeks if I can find the bits.

Another thought:
Would there be any benefit to using white LEDs under the footwells? I realise neons would be the ultimate choice, but I just happen to have a few LEDs laying around, wondering whether they'd be bright enough, and throw enough light around.
