I suggest getting a service on it, if that fails it is possible a solinoid has died. or dying

First off, a service, if that doesn't work, replace some O'rings in the Rear servo assembly, Ford P#'s EAB 7D028 A......... Spring
ED 7D026 A......... Gasket
EAB 7D025 A.........Seal
EAB 7D024 A.........Seal
and if the piston has a crack in it.....EAB 7D021 A .........Piston.
If that doesn't solve it....further investigation, worn out band, worn out solenoid, worn clutches, etc.

Try adjusting it yourself & see how it goes - It is on the rear drivers side of the box.

Loosen the outer locknut, Screw the centre adjustment in till it is tight, Then back it off 1 turn, re-tighten the locknut.

If it still shudders & you have replaced the servo seals as suggested before, You will probably have a worn out C3 reverse input clutch - $$....
