can anyone shed some light onto the easiest way to remove the front struts/springs from ef/el

With spanners and sockets. Apply anti clockwise torque with a manual applicator (from looking down the threads toward the bolt head) to remove nut. Do process in reverse to re apply.

Please note, do not attempt to apply any form of torque to any fasteners in your car using your teeth. May result in a metallic taste

Take you front rims off, remove your stub axles, unbolt the bottom of you shocks from the lower control arms the there are 3 bolts holding the top of the strut that can be unbolted from in the engine bay.

Don't worry about stub axles usually lower control arm is enough..
