G'day all, it's a EL i6 fairmont wagon. '98 hybrid, dual fuel, GRA gas system.
The problem is: when the car is asked to run on petrol, the fuel pump fails. symptoms: when on gas, the fuel pump lights up for about 2 seconds, and then goes out. I believe the engine needs to see the fuel pump operating when started first thing in the day, because without the fuel pump operating, it is a b**ch to start. After the car has started and running on gas and warmed up, it is fine to start and run. While the car is running on gas, the fuel pump IS operating. If the car is asked to run on petrol, again the pump lights up for about 2 seconds, and then goes out. It will not light up again, even when the engine cranks. If the car is running on gas, and is switched over to petrol, it stalls, and the fuel pump fails to operate. Switching back to gas is fine though. I have replaced the fuel pump. The fuel pump relay is operating ( I can feel the click when ign switched on) and all fuses seem to be whole. My manual talks about a PCM, which it calls the "Powertrain Control Module", quote from manual: "The electrical system has a fuel pump control relay which Is controlled by the engine management PCM." would this PCM be the ECU, located in the L/H kick panel? I have also run a diagnosis check, and have got code 796, I haven't got my code list with me, so I am not sure what this one is (speed sensitive p/s?) So, I have three questions: 1) is the PCM the ECU? if so, I will change it and see what happens, and< 2) what is code 796 3) any other ideas??? Cheers |

PCM is a module within the ECU. Now i dont if it is the same with the fords as the holdens in regards with the PCM, but the PCM in holdens is the traction control module.
Are you 100% that it is an error 796????? According to the diagnostics page, http://www.fordmods.com/documents.php?d=52 there is no 796. They stop at 795 in the 700's. If you want, you are more than welcome to come into work and we would be happy to put it on our scanner and it will tell us exactley what is wrong with it
