Hey Guys,
I want to lower my car so that it will sit above the wheels, the wheels are 17" and my car an EF Gli. Just want to know on what shocks and springs i need to get. I also don't want the car to be more bumpier, i seen it the cars get lower and more bumpier at the same time. I don't want this effect. All help appreciated. Thanks.

Any ideas on how much your looking at spending on your suspension set up?
Right now im thinking dobinson superlow springs all round will get you that height, camber kit for the front (depending on how low you go but generally with superlows the camber may be out and you'll need a kit to correct this), with maybe boge shortened shocks all round running the show. I personally am a fan of pedders GSR's and bilstein shocks, neither of which are cheap but they ride quite well in my experience so id recommend them for sure but it depends on the budget. Boge shocks are apparently very good shocks too, a lot of e-series guys use them. As for springs im not the biggest fan of pedders springs but they arent too bad, the ones i have in the rear i felt were a little on the soft side and required half a coil to be removed before they firmed up a bit lol. Have heard nothing but good things about dobinson springs though and have heard from many people that kings springs are supposedly kidney killers if you go too low. Anyways, just a little food for thought |

totally agree with kwikxr. you would probably want to go with either adjustable shocks, gives you more control over ride stability, or some regular/stiff shocks.
whatever you do, dont go chopping your springs or installing extra superlow springs without doing shorter shocks at the same time. otherwise the shocks wont do their job and your ride will not only be bumpy, but extremely dangerous...

There is no way you can lower your car to that extent, and still expect the same soft ride quality of the standard height, or XR suspension.
The shorter coils are much stiffer than the standard items, which will make the ride much firmer. In addition, you will need to use shortened heavy duty shocks to provide adequate control of the now stiffer springs. I think you need to work out what your priorities are. Do you want a nice supple ride with a bit of roll around corners and standard 4WD looking height? Or do you want it to look good, nice and low, have a firm supportive ride, and corner well? While it is possible to compromise this down the middle somewhere, it usually requires big $$$$ for the really good shocks, like Koni's ect. I hope this helps with your decision making process. Pedders short stroke shocks. The spring seat is an inch lower than standard.
King lows front. King super lows rear. Camber kits.

OK, then my budget recommendation would be, King Springs Super Low front and back, with Ultima Heavy Duty Short shocks. This combo can be had new off Ebay for around the $550 mark for the parts. You would need to install them yourself. I have found that many people install Super Low springs, but leave in the standard shocks, and as these shocks are constantly bottoming out, the end result is a harsh ride over any bumpy surface. If you find the rear is too low for your liking with the above combination, you can add in Nolathane spacers. I used 10mm spacers in my Red EB Sedan to raise the rear just a bit. This helped a lot in regards to navigating speed humps etc. The next step after springs and shocks is to look at sway bars. Pedders and Whiteline supply swaybar upgrades for the front and back and again, I recommend this as a worthwhile upgrade. However, I find the price of the bars new, around the $300 mark each, to be a bit pricey form my liking, and have sourced used parts. The other point worth mentioning, is that on an individual basis, your perception of what defines a bumpy ride, may well be firm and supportive from my perspective. Cheers BenJ

Not all the Short stroke shocks are shortened I dont think, but theyre probably best value for $ by far. Anyway Kings Superlows all round - you can still retain your standard height shocks (though I would replace them, especially if yours are a bit sad). Front will be ~1cm or so below the guard, rear the same (provided you dont have LPG/large stereo). Ride will be fairly firm at this height, regardless of shocks. Springs are around $250. |
