Hey, my ef fairmont has been acting weird with braking recently. when i brake, i feel pulsing in the pedal, and at the same time it becomes quite stiff. it doesnt always happen, and kind of comes randomly, whether first thing in the morning or after a fair bit of driving, though i have noticed it more when the brakes have had a chance to warm up.
What do u guys rekon it could be? Cheers, Alex

tell us what brakes/pads you have.
Yes, you need to machine the rotors. This is VERY common, especially if you have slotted rotors and Bendix CT pads. I suggest you machine them and put in Heavy Duty's or Ultimates. Sure, these pads chew out the rotors but they also keep them true, braking nicely and last. Rotors arent much more than a nice set of pads nowadays, so dont be alarmed as i said hard pads chew the rotors out.

I had a set of Bendix ultimates on my XF with DBA slotted rotors for 4 years.
I was surprised to see how little they had actually worn the rotors. |

mine are stock standard all the way... should i just go for new pads/discs or machine them. i had a look at my pads and they seem to have a fair bit of meat on them.

I would change the brake fluid, and at the same time, check the brake caliper slides....have a habit of the boots perishing and water gets in, rusts the slide, they get siezed, = crappy brake performance.

just machine them mate, not very exy at all.
when the discs get to minimum thickness then you will have to replace them

What do you mean by it stiffens up?
As in the brake pedal seems very hard to press to get the same braking effort? Could be the ABS playing up. JT |

JT yea that man... ive done a few more tests and stuff, just slamming the brakes in empty car parks. it feels the front left is grinding, u can feel the grind in the brake pedal. and for some reason lately hasnt been pulsating that much though

It definitely sounds like a regulated pulsing sound and not metal on metal grinding? JT |

JT yea mate it pulls to the left, and it actually grinds like metal on metal, but from front left. i had a look and it all seems ok, like plenty of meat on the pads etc. might get a machine i dno

Sounds like a front ABS sensor issue to me. I've had this issue a bit after I upgraded the brakes on my EF Fairmont, probably just wheel bearing torque that needs tightening I'm thinking. JT |
