At top dead centre No 1 cylinder should be at the very top of its travel. You should be able to tell by sticking a screwdriver into the sparkplug hole and feeling for the piston.

best way is to, check the crank pully and see that the mark on the pully marks up with the top dead center mark on the crank case which will have marks on it usually with 10o btdc and 0 or a t for tdc.
