the car- ef xr8 auto 200k
the problem- when accelerating at more the 50% throttle there is a bad rattling noise.

i know your all thinking 'wow a rattle that narrows it down' but anyone else had a dilema like this and you think i should get the bottom end looked at

when you say a bad rattling noise, does it sound like a tin with a couple of marbles in it, or is it a deeper 'knock' type noise.
Does it do it when cold / hot / always, or moreso when hot and under load
What fuel do you normally run in the car?

ok well it sounds like it might be pinging.
try running 98 octane fuel if its available over there (ie premium or ultimate etc)
see if it helps.

You may have a problem with the EFI, possibly running lean - which could be caused by an air leak in the intake, bad o2 sensor, dirty MAF, clogged injectors, low fuel pressure or blocked filter etc...

has anything been done to trigger the problem, ie timing changes etc?

Eventually the pinging will burn through a piston, and hammer the bearings so you would want to attend to it rather soon

im not sure on pinging as ive had that before in previous cars but i will cover the simple fuel change and see what happens.

the car is bog stock but it has had the harmonic balancer changed in the past by the previous owner. i might just take it back to dyno link and get them to give it a complete check over before leaving for sydney

Did you ever work out what this was? Was it pinging?
