hi guys,
i have just refit valve covers on my AU XR8, but after start up it sounds like the rockers are tapping on the left bank valve cover. they are the std yella terra type, so havent changed anything, and used the old rubber gaskets, which would think would be fine has anyone experienced this before? i will try to loosen off bolts and move around a bit. i did notice that, when taking them off, it was a tight fit. cheers |

Are they 1.6 or 1.7?
1.7 will hit, so you will need aftermarket rocker covers or rocker cover spacer! |

They are the std 220kw 1.73 YT RR's
Thanks for that, but they are the standard covers. I just took them off to clean them when i took off the intake. It may also be the rubber gasket has "squished" a bit over time therefore not leaving enough clearance, but they did seem OK. Is there a certain way to put on - ie. i havent put them on upside down? It is just a slight tap, and it seems to come from cyl 8 end rockers. It does not happen on other bank. I notice when i put my finger on the cover. Like i said I will loosen the bolts and move the cover around a bit, see how that goes. cheers |

yeah best bet is a spacer for rocker covers or taller covers. but with taller covers normally means a spacer in intake mnaifold aswell as upper will fowl on covers.

i want to keep original valve covers!
i think it might actually be the gasket. over time it has flattened out, and i may have tightened the bolts more, pressing the cover down on the RR's. Like I said it is only a slight tap - just touching. Still, tight clearance from the ford factory though!! |

A good fat gasket is Felpro 1645 - is like two normal cork/rubber ones sandwiching a steel shim making up 5/16".

I'd say that when you retightened the bolts that you tightened it tighter than it was fearing a leak. If so, it must've been pretty close as is! Best bet is to get some slightly taller gaskets but don't make them tight!

The factory rocker cover gaskets are a steel / rubber laminate. They do not crush to any significant amount. Are these the gaskets that were fitted to your engine, or had a previous owner changed them to a different gasket (like cork) that has much more crush-ability?
A common remedy for slight contact is to run two rocker cover gaskets (OE laminate style is the best, followed by rubber, with cork last) glued together with silicon. This will cure your problem with minimum cost and effort without any negative side effects.

thanks guys. sorted it out.
XA falcon - you are right rubber coated metal type. just had to loosen off the bolts and move (minor adjust) the cover around until it didn't hit. was fun though, as i had to run the engine while doing it. but worked, hey. geez, tight fit from ford though. guess they didn't factor that in when tickford installed YT RR's. cheers |

I thought they did have different covers for YT rockers. Aftermarket rubber/steel will squeeze a bit. I found out the hard way.

nup, same.
the rubber gasket may have been the key, as i think standard falcon 5.0L (with pressed RR's) had the cork gasket. |

Well my 93 eb v8 fairmont has the rubber gasket/shim , i added the cork one as i thought the roller rockers were hitting but turned out i installed them wrong with the fulcrum guide.
My old eb sxr8 had the rubber gasket aswell and that was an early 92 build, so id say if its got the cork gasket its been opened/replaced before. Brad |
