Just wanting to run by all here a problem that i am having on our 92 Ford Capri XR2 First thing in the morning go to start the car and it tries and tries but does not tick over...it does usually start 2nd go though.. Now sometimes it does not start 2nd go so i have to try and try again then the engine starts.. anyone had this problem before.. i was thinking it may be the starter motor or the spark plugs but unsure... cause it does start 2nd go usually... any help would be great.. Cheers Mike |

When you say it tries to start do you mean it tries to turn over as in very slowly or it [the starter] clicks ? Have you had the battery/charge rate checked?Does it start fine for the rest of the day?Check for dirty battery terminals, corroded /rusted connections ,loose wires on the earths and starter.Have fun Kevman

Correct, not the click the engine is trying to kick over.. kind of when you have a next to flayt battery and it is trying to kick over...
could it be the fuel pump... could that be the issue? Cheers |

Symptoms sound like a dodgy starter. Could be a bit of corrosion on the windings or something similar.
If the battery were actually flat, it'd be unlikely that you'd get it started at all. Especially not consistently like it is. Be careful how far you push it before you get it looked at, as you can cause damage to the rest of the starter electricals from over loading/heating the wiring if that's your problem.

no mate.
A fuel pump will not cause the engine/starter motor to crank slowly. If it was fuel pump or ignition system, the engine would still crank normally (until the battery went flat), but just wouldn't start. A laboured cranking is most likely the starter motor or battery (but considering the fact that it does actually start without going flat after cranking for a while, it's more likely the starter IMO) .

Is it easy to change the starter motor?

I'm not entirely sure how easy access is on the Capri's, but assuming it's not too difficult to get tools onto, it'll be very easy.
