i have a ebII ghia and the 4spd auto has lost 2nd and 4th gear, it still drives excelent, no slipping in the trans, the fluid is still pinky red, but it just goes from 1st then 3rd, any ideas? is the tranny a throw away or would it be viable to repair it??

you sure its not in 3rd all the time? could be Limp Home Mode.

This happened to one of my cars, pretty sure it ended up being the B1 band, ring an auto joint they'll know!

This happened in my eb, the band that looks after 2nd and4th has s**t itself. I just replaced it with a second hand box. If you decide to have it fixed get a full rebuild, you never know what will be next and you don't want to flush money down the crapper.

Do a test with a scanner, may find that it is the S1 and S2 solenoids. They are prone to far. Cost about 350 for both to be replaced including a service and fliud. You would be surprised how cheap they are to fix if there isnt anything mechanical wrong with them.

It's worth checking any and all the electrical connectors in the loom/s to the transmission. There will be two looms to the transmission - one smaller one that has reverse switch and neutral switch (maybe speedo is part of that one too) and a larger one that is from the ECU (controls the transmission of course).
The two looms will have connections at the transmission and each will have a connector near the rear of the passenger side head near the firewall - the small loom will be a square / rectangular connector and the other one will be a large round connector. There may also be a second large round connector in that area that is from the ECU to the EFI gear on the engine. You need to undo each connector, clean them out, spray a little CRC or something similar in (I wouldn't use WD40 as it doesn't really leave any protective film for very long - I use a special stuff we have for aviation but something like CRC should be ok) and reconnect them. A guy at work went thru this recently - after $$$ rebuilding the box it turned out to simply be the big connector up behind the engine! f**k USELESS mechanix!!! If I fixed Aeroplanes as CRAP as most of those clowns fix cars we'd all be f**k!! My workmate did the right thing: if a car mechanic had a plane that needed fixing we'd expect him to bring it to us - so when we have serious seeming car issues we'd expect the right thing to be take it to a car mechanic... - NOT!! - I learned that lesson many years ago and now my workmate has done the same.
