My transmission in the ED occassionally thumps into gear but only when it's really hot....When it's cold it shifts nice and smoothly. There is no slipping or grinding at all.
I called the local trnsmission place today and was quoted $165 (New filter, gasket and oil and adjustment of bands if required and a road test)....Is that a good price?

Probably wont fix it. More likely the S5 solenoid.

Yep, if you replace it get the AU S5 solenoid. I got that done with one of my services it was around 300ish including the service. It would also be good to get a good full flush with your oil, it not cheap but its worth it. My trans has done 240,000 now and its runs awesome still.

Well to do it the pan and oil have to come out anyway. Then you need to remove the valve body to replace it. Its not terribly difficult but it is very fiddly if you only have a car jack to get under it properly. You may as well change it whilst they service it because if you dont and it is stuffed then you will be paying for another tranny service and the part.
Ask your tranny place about the S5 solenoid and see what they say. The only thing is they are expensive little buggers.

i'd be prepared to pay $200 for that sort of work. I'd say $165 is not bad at all, and you'll notice it driving a fair bit better too

The S5 solenoid is easy to replace depending on what style one is fitted now, there are 2 different types, some have an ALL metal S5 and some with the S5 having a plastic end cap, these are shorter than the steel one and can be removed without having to take the Valve body out, I did.
You CAN use the S5 from an AU $289.50 retail part number AU 640078A1 but you will have to modify the retainer for it. The retainer is a right angle type u shape and at the end of the retainer on the 2 legs they need to be straightened out so that more pressure can be exerted on the S5 and hold it in place properly. If you intend to keep this vehicle I would suggest that the S1,S2,S3 solenoid be changed at the same time. They are $74.50 each part number EF 640078A1. Just make sure when you pull the old solenoids out, that you put the NEW ones in at the same angle as you take the OLD ones out, that way you will not stretch the wires also, be careful how you take the wires off the solenoids. |
