After talking for some time with a fellow forum member, Im wondering how much play there should be in a dizzy shaft?
I took the cap off mine a few weeks ago and there is no axial play, but theres about 5 degree movement rotation. there is also a metalic clack when it goes one way then the other. In talking to the guy, there is apparently a plate that encapsulates the aux shaft in to the block. In short, i think the aux shaft is floating in the car. could some one point out to me on this pic how the shaft is secured and if anyone knows what the play should be. i can't imagine it should rotate that much. Thanks heaps

there should be aproxx 1 mm movement between the aux gear and dizzy gear.

Pull the dizzy out and check the gear for wear.....maybe the problem.

the shaft can get slight end float but thats only from the plate and aux shaft face wear.
for it to float heaps the bolts would have to have come out, by this time the bolts would have sheared of or jammed the cam chain.. |

Mine has a fair bit of play too, maybe 5 degrees. Just feels like backlash in the gears. Still runs fine... touch wood.
