I'm just wondering what the best way to get power to a UHF i've got hold of would be. I'd like to actually run a couple of wires from the battery to the unit but i'm not sure if doing so will blow the UHF. Will I need a converter to lower the battery output or some sort of fuse in the system or will the UHF unit run off a direct line from the battery?

So you are wanting to install a UHF into a falcon for example... Do you want constant power or when you have the key on? Have you ever installed a stereo or anything? I thought it would be a pain in the butt regarding installing a UHF. But it is pretty simple, just have to postition were you want the aerial run the antenna wire to the rear of the uhf and then run a earth and power. The power you can get from the "memory" wire from your head deck (assuming you have an aftermarket deck) or run a wire from te ciggy lighter if you want it off the accessories etc.

I would like it to be able to run when the key isn't in. That's why i'm thinking i'll have to run wires from the battery directly unless there's some way to tap into the existing wiring and still draw power when the accessories are off.

Run the wires directly from the battery otherwise you may get interferance and brownouts ect

Here's what I've done with my UHF in my ED...
The positive wire (red) should have an inline fuse so you shouldn't have to worry about blowing any electrics. Now, For the wiring set up I've wired the positive to the fuse box and the negative is earthed to the car body. This way you can use the UHF without having to turn on the ignition to accessories. I can get pics tomorrow morning if you like?

Here are the pics...
Here is the UHF installed just below the stereo:  Heres where I wired it up - The red positive wire gets power through a live vacant fuse holder in the fuse box. The earth wire is grounded via a bolt to the right of the bonnet release cable. This wiring method allows you to use the UHF without having the ignition on accessories...A constant source of power that draws very little power.
