while driving the AU Fairmont there is a cranking noise
it happens while driving in a straight line, but more when i am turning where do you reckon i should i start looking? cheers as a rough guess i'm thinking it's the steering rack under the car any ideas? |

that sounds like it might be the front wheel bearings.
try jacking up the front and spinning the wheels and see if there is any drag or noises. also worth giving them a wobble while they are up in the air, to check that they don't have any play in them.

Some tyres can make that sound too....so while driving it, put your foot on the brakes reasonably hard...if the noise gets louder, under brakes, its the tyres, but if the noise " slows down ", it the wheels bearings.
I have replaced those bearings at as little as 80,000km ( warranty )...usually last not long after 100 to 120,000km......depending on the roads/goat tracks......
